How to photograph and edit your sketches on your phone
🕑 Added 2019-06-21 04:22:33 +0000 UTCI am not a fancy person, I don't own any expensive equipment or software (except this new swanky ipad I just bought and love!) I've pretty much always done all my work from my phone, including photographing and editing my images, I even take photos to make into prints this way. Being able to use your phone for everything saves a lot of time and makes what you do that much more portable so I thought I'd share some tips with you guys on how to edit your sketches to be ready for posting/coloring over!
I always photograph my images in natural lighting, usually by an open window with a lot of diffused light but not in direct sunlight. Even so, like above, the image will look dark and yellowed, so I use the help of a handy little App called "Photoshop Express".
The main setting on there, which is my godsend is a setting called "Whites" which I crank way the heck up to make the image much lighter without affecting the line-work. Below I've included a picture of each of the settings I used to achieve the above lightened photo. If whites isn't enough sometimes I will raise the exposure setting by just a tad, (+1) because any more than that can wash out your image. I also like to play around with the contrast setting, which I'm sure most of you are familiar with, depending on the image you may need it more or less. Another thing that's important is to lower the saturation on your image because it will naturally be somewhere on the yellow/blue spectrum. You most likely want your image more black and white, which means you can lower the setting all the way but I actually like my image to have a very subtle pink tint, so I lower the saturation to maybe 25% and then tint the image pink. It's not something most people would notice but something that I think gives a nice warm feel to the image. It's really simple! Those are all the settings I play around with to whiten my images in preparation for coloring. Hope that comes in handy!

It's free? I went to their website to download it, and it says it's only free if you are a student or teacher, and I am neither of those. (I mean I consider myself a "hobbyist student" but I am sure they will prompt you to fill out a profile involving a .edu e-mail address to verify you're actually a student in order to get it for free.) It's been years since I had a .edu e-mail. The other choice besides student/teacher was "a business user" but I don't plan on using it to make profit. I just wanted to download it to learn a new software and fiddle around. I guess I could pick business user for now and get the 'free trial' but it will expire after a month I think. Unfortunately I don't have any Apple products in my house, so I can't use Procreate. :-/ I guess I will stick with Photoshop for now, or maybe try the 'trial' version of Sketchbook Pro.
I think as of last year sketchbook went totally free. I did use sketchbook for a long time mainly because I had a Microsoft device and didn’t have a lot of options. It has a lot of issues and I don’t personally recommend it if you have access to procreate. Procreate is Apple only but definitely the superior program. It’s so nice to have an app that isn’t crashing all the time, aaaa
I was wondering what program you use to color in the photos.... I could have sworn I read somewhere on your IG once that you used AutoDesk SketchBook(?) I have Photoshop, and I have enjoyed using it over the years, but I would like to try Sketchbook or w/e program you are using to try something new... altho I just realized they make you download SketchBook Pro now which costs like $85 a year I think. e___e;;

oh, okay. I don't have these options, I can only choose between the ones I have written. also the bandage-looking thing has has two "bandages" instead of one like in your screenshot

I started off using a Samsung phone and it had all these features! I only recently switched to iPhone and didn’t find any difference with the app. You may just be in a different submenu, because I see those options you listed too if I scroll further over :3

could it be that you're using an iPhone? on Samsung there are no light, colors, effects, details options but instead correction, split tone, blur and vignette.
