Chapter 33: A Necessary Cruelty
🕑 Added 2025-09-03 18:46:04 +0000 UTC"It's a simple matter of applied arcane theory," Hermione said, lounging on the plush sofa in Tony's workshop, not even bothering to look up from her game. "Magic is the energy, the incantation is the code, and the wand is the focusing array. It channels the user's will to temporarily overwrite the rules of reality." She gave him a condescending little smile. "It's far too troublesome to explain to a Muggle. Perhaps I'll bring you a first-year textbook. A genius like you should be able to grasp the basics."
Tony's mouth twitched. He was a man who had built a miniature arc reactor in a cave, from a box of scraps, and this twelve-year-old was talking to him like he was a particularly slow toddler. "One of these days," he muttered under his breath, turning back to his work, "I'm going to build an anti-magic suit. Then we'll see who's condescending."
He put down his tools, a new, serious expression on his face. "Pepper," he said, looking up at her. "I need your help."
Pepper, who had been arranging a plate of fruit, paused. "With what, Tony?"
He slid a small, encrypted flash drive across the workbench. "I need you to go to my office terminal. Hack the main server, get me all the recent shipping manifests. Look in the ghost drive, the executive archives. Everything."
He had realized the obvious. The weapons showing up in the hands of terrorists weren't stolen; they were being sold. There was a traitor inside Stark Industries, and he needed proof.
Pepper didn't move. A quiet, heavy stillness settled over the room. "And what are you going to do, Tony," she asked, her voice dangerously calm, "when I bring you that information?"
Hermione quietly put down her game controller. The atmosphere had shifted.
"What do you think I'm going to do?" Tony said, completely missing the warning signs. "I'm going to find my weapons, and I'm going to destroy them. I have to clean up my own mess."
Pepper's eyes filled with a deep, weary sadness. "Tony, I will do anything for you, you know that. But I can't help you do this. I can't help you kill yourself."
Tony's face hardened. "This is the only thing that matters, Pep. There are no more art galas, no more charity dinners. This is my one and only mission now."
"Then I'll resign," she said, her voice barely a whisper, but the words hit with the force of a physical blow.
Tony exploded. "You'd leave me now?" he shouted, his voice cracking with a hysterical, guilt-ridden fury. "After all these years? You stood by my side while my weapons were killing innocent people, but now, now that I'm trying to save them, you want to walk away?"
"You're not saving anyone, Tony!" Pepper's voice rose to match his, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "You're on a suicide mission! I can't watch you do it. I won't." She shook her head, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek, and turned away.
Tony watched her walk toward the door, a look of utter, desolate abandonment on his face. His fury evaporated, leaving only a hollow, helpless feeling. He looked over at the one person left in the room. "Hermione," he began, his voice pleading, "you get it, right? You're not leaving too…?"
Hermione had already stood up. She looked at this brilliant, broken man, this so-called winner who now looked like a lost, pitiful child, and she knew that the time for gentle prodding was over. It was time for a stronger dose of medicine.
"Tony," she said, her voice as cold and clear as ice. "Why in the world would you think I would choose you over her?"
Tony flinched as if she had slapped him. Even Pepper, her hand on the door, stopped and looked back.
"Sister Pepper, don't," Hermione said, her voice filled with an unquestionable authority that made both adults fall silent. She turned her full, merciless attention on Tony.
"You want to be a superhero? You want to save the world? Fine. But have you, for one single second, stopped to think about what she went through while you were gone? Do you have any idea how she held this entire company together, how she fielded calls from the military and lied to the press and worked herself to the bone, all while being terrified that you were dead? No. Of course you don't. Because you came back, and you never asked. You never thanked her. You just locked yourself in here with your toys to numb the pain."
Every word was a perfectly aimed blow.
"She thought she would finally get a break when you returned, but you just handed her the keys to the kingdom and dove back into your trauma. She manages your life, she runs your company, and she worries about you every single second of every single day. The only reason I even come here, Tony, is because it's the only time she ever allows herself to relax."
"She is your assistant," Hermione continued, her voice rising with a cold, righteous fury. "She is not your wife, or your mother, or your partner. She is an ordinary person who you are asking to commit corporate espionage, an act that could land her in prison, just because you know she cares enough about you to do it."
"That life, the one you're so eager to throw away, was bought and paid for by the sacrifice of Yinsen. Are you trying to protect the world, or are you just looking for a glorious way to die because you can't live with the guilt? If it's the latter," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, "I can help you with that right now."
She casually waved her hand. Diffindo! An invisible blade of force shot across the room and sliced a solid steel workbench cleanly in half with a high-pitched, metallic shriek.
"I…" Tony stammered, his face pale as a sheet. He took a staggering step forward.
The next second, the tip of her wand was pressed against the arc reactor in his chest. A terrifying, palpable aura of power erupted from her. The air in the lab crackled with raw magic. A violent hurricane swirled around her small form, sending tools, documents, and pieces of equipment flying. For the first time, Tony and Pepper were seeing not just a clever child, but the awesome, terrifying weight of the word "wizard."
"Incendio Duo!"
Several pillars of roaring, white-hot fire erupted from the tip of her wand. The flames, imbued with a malevolent, serpentine life, twisted and coiled around Tony, forming a blazing, inescapable cage that separated him from the rest of the world. The heat was so intense it began to melt the metal around him.
Having done all this, Hermione turned her back on him. "Sister Pepper, let's go," she said calmly. "Let him sit in the fire for a while and figure out what it is he truly wants."
She took Pepper's unresisting hand and led her from the room. Pepper paused at the door, looking back at the man she loved, trapped and broken in a circle of magical flame.
"I'll get you the documents, Tony," she said, her voice quiet but firm. Her steps faltered for a second.
"Then I'll resign."
Watching them disappear out the door, Tony felt the last of his strength leave him. He collapsed to the floor, his head in his hands, surrounded by the roaring flames and the silent, mocking reflection of his own face in the armor that was supposed to save the world.
Outside, Pepper couldn't help but look back, her professional resolve crumbling, her face a mask of pure, unadulterated worry.
"Hermione, your flame...Is Tony's life in danger?"
