Gue Chapter 2: Child's Play
🕑 Added 2022-08-09 03:37:28 +0000 UTCAh! Chapter 2. It’s a shorter one this time, and it took longer than I expected, but I think I am settling into a good pattern of work with my new job, so I should be able to bang these out quicker.
Gareth is loosely based on a real camp counselor I briefly had when I was in high school (I think?). My memories of him are almost nonexistent aside from the fact that he was hairy, long-haired, bespectacled, and from a distinct memory of him putting on a goofy nerd voice and saying “I swing my broadsword.” I don’t even remember the context. He might have been a huge asshole, honestly, but from the vague bits of memory I’ve cobbled together he seemed like a really good counselor. When you work at summer camp you can’t take yourself too seriously, and he seemed like he really leaned into being a nerd in a fun way.
Beany superfine may notice that Mary’s design is partially salvaged from this, albeit somewhat taller and sporting a nose. The joke of “Marry, Fuck, Kill” is kinda funny, but I think the contrast of this sweet young childcarer having a last name as cartoonishly intense as “FuckKill” is funnier. It feels reminiscent of that 30 Rock joke where Liz has to take a sensitivity class with this super friendly HR rep named Mr. Wienerslave, or an inversion of how in kids cartoons teachers will often be named something like Ms. Bitters or Mr. Killstein or whatever.
Did anyone else who played DnD have that one guy in their party who was really delighted by the idea of getting mead to drink during an adventure? Like, presumably because it was the same sort of thing that the characters would drink? I’m gonna go ahead and assume we all had a guy like that.
