Two Friends Discuss Apes

It's one of the worst pieces of nonverbal language ever invented, and the sicko caveman who came up with the thing should have been promptly clubbed and left for dead. Ah well.
This was actually a really fascinating topic to research, and I would encourage anyone interested to read up about it on wikipedia and the like. Perhaps most interesting is Chomsky's argument against the whole thing, which I've linked here. He makes some very persuasive points, thought I'm still not entirely where I stand on the matter. Alternatively, if you want to make yourself extremely sad, you can read a little more about Nim Chimsky's life here. I had to omit certain parts to fit it in the comic.
A couple jokes not included in the comic; originally, the Nim Chimsky anecdote was going to be earlier, with Heartfriend scoffing or something, not a sad ending. Then, while making fun of one of the other gorillas in a cage, the gorilla would grab her by the head and pull her into the cage, signing "Give nipple me give nipple me nipple me nipple give me you" and Hearts would say something like "Where's the Harambe guy? Come back! Your country needs you once more!" I nixed this ending because I already made a funnier Harambe joke earlier, and because I felt I had to include the sad shit about Nim to make the comic more genuine, and because it makes a smoother transition to the cage joke.
Kanzi, the bonobo mentioned in the second panel, is famous for talking using a big grid of symbols and for being able to play pac-man (he sucks at it, though.) There's probably a joke in there somewhere about that being the case because he refused to play Donkey-Kong.

What are the little shapes on the two friends heads? Are they horns, or little clips, or something else?

All this ape research to get them to talk and shit seems cute until you realize they were doing it to see if they could turn the apes into slave labor
