At the beginning you can pick between sandbox and VN mode. VN mode is straight story telling with choices only. Sandbox would be the option where you have to go from location to location yourself and can select the order of events available at that time (e.g. on the ship you can pick to go from kitchen to medbay or bridge etc. to find events)
