I know that they are relatively common in Poland. From memory, nearly every second food place that serves zurek has the option to serve it in a bread bowl.

Remember. There is nothing we won't do for looks!
They hollow out a large round piece of bread and put a thick soup/stew/dip in them. When you finish eating the soup you can then eat the bread. Our Faire had a meatball and marinara one, a cheddar and broccoli, and a spinach and artichoke dip. We sometimes make them at home during cold months too.
