It took me a good full week to get to the end of this mess.
The "look at" feature, basically "look where I tell you to do it", works, let's say, 90%. I stop there, I don't think I can do better. The head, the neck and the shoulders move, according to refined proportions, in order to allow the character to turn towards the designated target while avoiding the rigidity of a simple "rotate".
You should know that with each character, depending on how he has been rigged, Unity's default "look at" is ... very capricious. The horizontal, vertical and diagonal axes are also very dependent on the way in which the character was created ... And of course, you also have to remain compatible with the animation of the character in progress. For example, if the character is looking down in the animation, the "look at" must not add more and end up looking at his navel ... from the inside :p
In the example shown, I have three different types of axis with different behavior from the classic "look at".
I put in PJ, to give you an idea, a video of the behavior of the classic "look at" in rough. As far as Worgy was doing rather well, there was only the limitation of the angle (to avoid the exorcist effect) and the flexibility of the movement to manage, as much for Alico and Suzane (classy model of Blender), s' was "the party in the village" :)
As you can see, it's working pretty well now :)
It's not perfect because, as much for Worgy it's rather impeccable, as much for Alico when he has to look upwards, it gets stuck a little ... but ... well ... normally for this type of " donkey "you shouldn't look down on it too much :)
I'm pretty happy with myself on this one!
I will try to make progress this week on the animations of the next version of TSOE. Especially that the next weekend I will not be able! It's Mother's Day in France ... and you can imagine that she doesn't have the slightest idea of
my hobbies ....: p
