Ariel had never been known for being the smartest in the class. He had embraced freedom as a dogma and since then he hadn't cared about anything around him. Any kind of authority was the enemy, chaos was his way of life and music is what made it all make sense.
Landing on earth had been a liberation, but also a condemnation. A place full of new experiences, but also of strange and arbitrary rules. They had to hide, pretend to be mere mortals when they were gods. A reality that at first bothered him and then he found most interesting. Human life was loaded with colors, smells and sounds. It was rich and vibrant and he wished to live it in the same way they experienced it. Although he understood all too soon that he could not have a full life without some suffering.
After several centuries, the planet was plunged into a war that almost threatened to end all life. A time of darkness and regression where art ceased to make sense and was lost in the nooks and crannies of survival. Ariel plunged into despair, retreated to an abandoned building and turned it into a workshop. All his efforts were poured into that project that did not seem to have a goal, nor an end.
He painted, composed, sculpted and, on more occasions than he would like to admit, destroyed. Nothing seemed connected. It was just better than getting lost in reality. Until the lines, ideas and songs seemed to converge on something. Constantly, he kept falling back on the same patterns. I saw eyes, a skin, a personality, I could even imagine the sound of laughter. Pieces of a collage that seemed to be drawing a person in detail. As soon as he became aware of this fact Ariel became more obsessive and perfectionist, trying to find out details of that unknown person through his works. One day he thought he heard her voice pronouncing his name, he thought he knew her favorite color or where she had a mole with a strange shape. They were details that he could not explain where they were born, but they were as real to him as the clouds or the sun could be. And if they were real... It was because that person had to be real too. There were millions of individuals on that planet, with millions of possible combinations and, among all of them, one had to be his. That conviction filled him with energy and for the first time he felt ready to go outside.
He believed in fate, but also in detectives, artificial intelligences and everything he could think of to find the object of his obsession. But nothing worked. No matter how much effort he put into it, it seemed to go against all results.
And one day, his brain clicked. It shut down completely and he decided to ignore it. He didn't paint it again, he didn't write it again, he didn't mold it. He let it fade into his memory as if it had been the memory of someone real. Something inside him broke a little when he thought about it so he did like all the things in his life that had gone wrong: Bury them.
Valefar's arrival contributed to this in the worst possible way. As soon as he could, he put him to work. Tours, abusive contracts and records he had no control over. Whatever it took to keep him busy and exploited. He knew he didn't get paid even a small part of what he generated, but he didn't care, because confronting Valefar wasn't an option and as long as he could hold on to a score he could escape.
"Hello,” Ariel looked up from her notebook to find the face of a waitress, ”Is there anything you'd like?
For a second Ariel was abstracted. Unable to answer.
"Oh, you're a musician," the woman asked, turning the notebook over in her fingers with a confidence that should have annoyed him but didn't. On the page was a simple sentence crossed out, underlined and rewritten a thousand times: “I crawl mercilessly, seeking freedom.”
"It's just a few verses that I can't get to sound right," the woman bit the inside of her cheek impatiently. Ariel stared at her furtively. Something in that face was familiar to her. He wasn't sure what, but something in her face comforted him and gave him so much confidence that he was able to rummage through her sketches.
"Why don't you try this?” She took the pen and divided the sentence in two to add a couple of new parts in each of the two fragments.
Fate screams, dragging me mercilessly,
but my footsteps resound, seeking freedom.
Ariel stared at the sheet for a second.
"Not bad for a waitress,” she laughed.
"I'll get you a coffee, but by the time I get back I hope you'll want to order something else as a thank you,” Ariel nodded and a mischievous grin broke out on his face. He watched the girl walk away with an awkward step as the light cast on a swollen belly only proper of someone who was in an advanced state of pregnancy.

Ariel nunca se había caracterizado por ser el más listo de la clase. Había abrazado la libertad como un dogma y desde entonces no se había preocupado por nada de lo que le rodeaba. Cualquier tipo de autoridad era el enemigo, el caos era su forma de vida y la música es lo que hacía que todo eso tuviera sentido.
Aterrizar en la tierra había sido una liberación, pero también una condena. Un lugar lleno de nuevas experiencias, pero también de normas extrañas y arbitrarias. Debían ocultarse, fingir ser simples mortales cuando eran dioses. Una realidad que al principio le molestaba y luego le pareció de lo más interesante. La vida de los humanos estaba cargada de colores, olores y sonidos. Era rica y vibrante y deseaba vivirla de la misma forma en la que ellos la experimentaban. Aunque comprendió demasiado pronto que no podía tener una vida plena sin algo de sufrimiento.
Después de varios siglos, el planeta se sumió en una guerra que casi amenaza con terminar con toda vida. Una época de oscuridad y retroceso donde el arte dejaba de tener sentido y se perdía en los recovecos de la supervivencia. Ariel se sumió en la desesperanza, se retiró a un edificio abandonado y lo convirtió en un taller. Todos sus esfuerzos se volcaron en aquel proyecto que no parecía tener un objetivo, ni tampoco un final.
Pintaba, componía, esculpía y, en más ocasiones de las que le gustaría admitir, destruía. Nada parecía estar conectado. Solo era mejor que perderse en la realidad. Hasta que las líneas, las ideas y las canciones parecían converger en algo. Constantemente, recurría a los mismos patrones. Veía unos ojos, una piel, una personalidad, hasta podía imaginar el sonido de una risa. Retales de un collage que parecían estar dibujando a una persona de forma detallada. Tan pronto cómo fue consciente de este hecho Ariel se volvió más obsesivo y perfeccionista, tratando de averiguar detalles de aquella persona desconocida a través de sus obras. Un día le pareció escuchar su voz pronunciando su nombre, creía saber su color favorito o donde tenía un lunar con una forma extraña. Eran detalles que no podía explicar de donde nacían, pero que eran tan reales para él como lo podían ser las nubes o el sol. Y si eran reales… Es porque esa persona debía de serlo también. Había millones de individuos en aquel planeta, con millones de combinaciones posibles y, entre todas ellas, una, tenía que ser la suya. Esa convicción le llenó de energía y por primera vez se sintió dispuesto para salir al exterior.
Creyó en el destino, pero también en los detectives, las inteligencias artificiales y todo aquello que se le ocurrió para encontrar al objeto de su obsesión. Pero nada funcionaba. Por más esfuerzo que le ponía, parecía ir en contra de todo resultado.
Y un día, su cerebro hizo click. Se apagó por completo y decidió ignorarlo. No volvió a pintarlo, no volvió a escribirlo, ni moldearlo. Dejó que se desdibujara en su memoria como si hubiese sido el recuerdo de alguien real. Algo dentro de él se rompía un poco cuando pensaba en ello así que hizo como todas las cosas que en su vida habían ido mal: Enterrarlas.
La llegada de Valefar contribuyó a ello de la peor forma posible. Tan pronto como pudo lo puso a trabajar. Giras, contratos abusivos y discos de los que carecía de control. Todo lo que fuese necesario para tenerlo ocupado y explotado. Sabía que no cobraba ni siquiera una pequeña parte de lo que generaba, pero le daba igual, porque enfrentarse a Valefar no era una opción y mientras pudiese aferrarse a una partitura podría escapar.
—Hola.— Ariel levantó la vista desde su cuaderno de notas para encontrarse con la cara de una camarera.— ¿Hay algo que vayas a querer?
Por un segundo Ariel se quedó abstraído. Incapaz de responder.
—¡Oh! ¿eres músico?— Preguntó la mujer girando la libreta entre sus dedos con una confianza que debió molestarle pero que no fue así. Sobre la página había una simple frase tachada, subrayada y reescrita mil veces: “Me arrastro sin piedad, buscando libertad.”
—Solo son algunos versos que no consigo que suenen bien.— La mujer se mordió el interior de la mejilla con impaciencia. Ariel se quedó contemplántola a hurtadillas. Algo en aquel rostros se le hizo conocido. No estaba seguro del qué, pero algo en su cara le reconfortaba y le daba tanta confianza que le permitía hurgar entre sus bocetos.
—¿Por qué no pruebas con esto?— Tomó el bolígrafo y dividió la frase en dos para añadir un par de partes nuevas en cada uno de los dos fragmentos.
El destino grita, me arrastra sin piedad,
pero mis pasos resuenan, buscando libertad.
Ariel se quedó contemplando la hoja por un segundo.
—No está mal para ser de una camarera.— Ella se rió.
—Te traeré un café, pero para cuando vuelva espero que quieras pedir algo más a modo de agradecimiento.— Ariel asintió y una sonrisa cargada de picardía afloró en su rostro. Observó a la chica alejarse con paso torpe mientras que la luz se proyectaba sobre un vientre hinchado solo propio de alguien que estaba en avanzado estado de embarazo.

Very cool story - I can strongly relate to the struggles of an artist with themselves and the weight of the world 😅 And to Ariel in general too I guess...free spirit, against authorities, loves music. I'm much less bold & confident, but I think we would get along quite nicely anyway😉❤️
