Nine years old, that's the age her son would be today. An unease tightened in her chest and hadn't let go since the day he disappeared. An uneasiness that she had tied tightly with a leash so that the pain would stop tormenting her and pushed her forward. But on days like that it was impossible not to remember the little details that her memory had not yet managed to erase.
Looking in the mirror that morning, Akane felt older, more tired, while the memory of her chubby little baby remained frozen in a blur of time that faded further and further into the horizon. Each new mark on her skin was a reminder of all she had missed, of all the moments she had been separated from him, and confirmed her suspicions about her own incompetence. She had never felt capable of calling herself a mother, both because of the short time she had had him with her, and because of her lack of confidence in being able to do so successfully.
It had happened so fast, one day she met a kind and disoriented stranger and the next she was alone and expecting the arrival of a baby. She was too young, too naïve and certainly too brave. Raziel was not a good place to raise a baby, let alone as a single mother in her late teens. But now almost a decade had passed and there were no more excuses to be made. Her faults, whether due to age or stupidity, had not been corrected, if anything they had grown gradually, and the only thing that kept her searching was that this child was still the victim of her own mistakes.
She splashed cold water on her face until she managed to forget a little about her upset stomach. She grabbed the clean clothes straight from the dryer and hurriedly put them on. She had been saving for months to hire this bounty hunter. They're weren't cheap, but everyone spoke as highly of their results as they did of their oddities. And though they refused to take her in at first, they eventually succumbed at her insistence.
"Maskeguy..." It wasn't hard to identify them, they looked out of place even among their own kind. With that rubber mask and their gaze lost in a glass with a straw. She would be lying if her first impression was a good one. They looked like an unreliable person, the kind that would leave you behind in a difficult situation.
"Akane..." they said in a metallic, impersonal tone. She took a seat and took out the folder with all the documents she still had on her little boy and what she had been able to collect by bribing businessmen in the St. Gabriel underground. "Stop right there," they said, raising a bandaged hand in front of her. "I didn't say I was going to take your case. But I ended up agreeing to meet you, so you'd stop melting my phone with calls and texts."Akane bit her cheek inwardly to stop herself from blurting out an expletive.
"I'm willing to pay whatever it takes. I don't care as long as I find some trace of my son" they shook their head, as frustrated as she was, "I need to find him, do you understand that?' She slid the folder across the table again, "Please..."
"I am a thief. I don't know who gave you my contact, but I have my own rules and I never get involved with people, especially if they are minors..." Akane, far from giving up, opened the folder and showed a photo of the baby, where he was posing smiling in his mother's arms.
"He was taken from me in a crowded underground car when he was only 8 months old." She felt the person's expressionless posture break a little and sensed that there was much more beneath their initial rejection. The two held each other's gaze for a moment and Akane held her breath until Maskeguy relented. Finally, they took a look at the documents he was carrying.
"A decade..." Akane nodded a little more distressed from her seat, ’The trace couldn't be colder... My field is robbery, not kidnapping. I doubt I can find anything that you haven't done before...' The guy's eyes lingered on one particular detail, “And what about the father?” Akane shrugged, trying to look unconcerned, but his gaze wandered with a hint of embarrassment.
"He disappeared long before I even knew he was pregnant" For a skinnny little weirdo, standing in front of them was uncomfortable, as if they could see every weakness she had at a glance "I tried to look for him, but I had no success. But, he's not the one I'm interested in"
"I see," they said, looking back at the documents and sorting through some of them, "I'll start with the easy stuff and see if I can't find anything that will do any good. I'll contact you when I find out more." Before she could say anything meaningful, Akane was left alone in front of the papers that had been left scattered on the table. The simple act of picking them up seemed a tedious and exhausting task, and she put it off for what she couldn't tell whether it was minutes or hours. When she finally felt up to it, she avoided looking too closely at the few memories she had managed to keep of her little boy and locked them between the hard covers of the filing cabinet, like someone locking a demon under a cursed seal.
She got up and walked to the bar. She didn't even know she had ordered a beer until the frothy mug ended up in her hands. She wished she could have talked to someone about it, but everyone she had ever loved had long since gone away from her. She leaned her head on the bar and let herself be swept away by the despair she used to have under control.
Crash.
As they passed by, the person next to her had knocked over her half-finished beer, soaking the folder and scattering the contents on the floor:
"Shit! What's the matter with you?" she said out of her mind as she bent down to try to salvage the wreckage. Only when she was sure that they all seemed to be in good condition did she face the stranger, who was wobbling like a leaf in autumn and looked as lost as she was.
"Well...", she thought. It seemed she wasn't the only one having a rough patch.
