Lore: Portals

In the world of CHR, the arrival of the supernaturals is presented as a transition between two planes, but that doesn't mean that the concept of 'portals' connecting Earth with Heaven and Hell doesn't exist. The difference between one and the other is that the former is a transition that supernaturals make to adapt to the human environment without breaking or colliding the barrier between worlds, and the latter is an opening where they can enter (or leave) in a pure state.
Types of portals
Portals can come from heaven or from hell, although the former are so unknown that the only references have not been verified as 'real'. Even so there is an imaginary around them.
- Heavenly portals. Some common depictions include stairways or bridges to Heaven. The biblical story of the Tower of Babel and Jacob's ladder are examples of such portals.
- Infernal portals. These are often described as dark, dangerous and suffering places. They often resemble crevices or abysses. They can appear in dark places, caverns or even at the bottom of seas and volcanoes.
It's theorised whether these doors have to do not only with a premeditated action of supernaturals to open them, but also with the layout of the environment and its previous history, since they are always characterised by some similarities among them - appearance, local history, etc.-.
Recognised portals
Although in theory rituals have been developed to create these kinds of openings, they require a very specific kind of magic, high energy sources and knowledge beyond the reach of many. That's why there are few records of this happening successfully. In addition, angels are reluctant for openings or portals to be created, so we only have records of infernal gates, which were sealed at some point in history.
Some of the most renowned are:
- The Well of Barhout: Located in the ancient kyu: Yemen, it was also known as the "Well of Death" or the "Well of Hell", and was a groove-shaped formation that emanated a strong smell of sulphur. It was one of the oldest breccias, so its origin is not well known. Still, it was considered a cursed place for a long time afterwards.
- The Cave of the Seven Entrances: Located in the city of Puebla, Mexico, this cave is believed to have a connection to Hell. According to legend, the seven entrances represent the seven deadly sins, and those who ventured into the cave could encounter supernatural or evil experiences. The reality is that it isn't known whether it was a breach or just housed a large community of demons.
- Houska Castle: Located in the Czech Republic, Houska Castle was famous for the legends surrounding it. It is said to have been built on a site where a gate to Hell was open, and was used to seal the entrance. According to the stories, during construction, evil creatures and horrible sounds emerged from inside the castle. It is probably the largest gateway to hell ever opened. Countless lives were lost before it could be sealed again. It is also the most extensively documented. Hasiel studied it in depth before opening Raziel's breach.
- Mount Osore: Located in Japan, it was considered a sacred place and associated with the underworld. Records are very old and sources are unreliable, but it was closed thanks to a great sacrifice by an unknown angel. Since then, the infernal activity has been steadily subsiding. Therefore, it is considered that it was indeed an infernal breach.
- Cliffs of Moher: These cliffs located on the west coast of Ireland have been linked to Hell in Irish mythology. The cliffs were a place where lost souls and supernatural creatures congregated. The stones bellowed unheard sounds and the minds of many a peasant were corrupted with ideas from another plane. Fortunately or unfortunately, this gate was never fully open, but only leaked some fragments of hell. It is thought to have been the first conscious attempt to drive a wedge between planes. The results were persistent but ineffective.

Suelen parecerse a grietas o abismos.
