Lore: The base of the Barren Lands: The Galleries (part 2)
🕑 Added 2022-09-30 10:00:07 +0000 UTC
Every child born and raised in the Barren Lands Base has heard the story of the city's galleries. A hidden place, full of terrifying creatures, from which there is no escape. Although the parents' intention is to keep them out of trouble and eat the vegetables, even they are terrified by the idea, because even if they don't tell their children, it isn't just a legend.
Origin
The Base's self-management system encountered a problem that it didn't know how to address. The automation of processes and the factories on the lower levels are the great engine of the city, but also a great risk for both the base itself and those living on the surface. A high percentage of workers end up developing some kind of mutation. Contracting a mutagen, no matter how minor it may seem, is a major health risk. No one has obtained a cure, their conditions predispose others to it, the degeneration is unstoppable and sometimes involves very problematic bouts of violence.
Closing the factories was unthinkable, so the risks were reported. And although everyone fears this fate, there is always some poor soul willing to accept factory work. Many elderly, low-income or disabled people end up accepting in the hope of not contracting it, or simply prefer to think about the present.
But, in the same way, the proliferation of these individuals has been a major headache for a long time. At first, the rules of coexistence were applied to them. But even when they were expelled, they were a major environmental and epidemic risk, and the cities outside were unwilling to allow it. With this in mind, the base knew it had to tackle the problem from within. Strong medical controls were put in place to detect cases as early as possible, but although attempts were made to find a cure, trials were quickly suspended after several regrettable incidents and no cure.
The second solution was to prepare an area to house the mutants. An ideal idea, but one that soon began to show flaws. A group within the bounty hunters, calling themselves the mutant hunters, was formalised... The guild hunted them down and apprehended them, but the city was having increasing trouble keeping them. Lack of space and food led to a drastic decision to abandon them in the galleries. An area, in the lower part of the city, where much of the waste ended up and where the city still has the capacity to expand. This not only solved the mutant problem, but also ensured cheap labour, which would not refuse to maintain pipes full of toxic substances. In return, the city provides the mutants with a minimum set of necessities.
Although more than a few people express their dissatisfaction with the inhumane treatment, no one dares to oppose the system. It would be like denying that the population of the base doesn't fear mutants.
The galleries
In this remote place there is no sunlight, but there is no electricity either. What you can find are vast muddy plains, mountains of metres and metres of rubbish and waterfalls of sewage. In this environment, human survival seems difficult, but the mutants have adapted and their resistance to the environment is commendable. Those who still retain their sanity negotiate and plan their requests to the Base and manage their resources by collecting Garbage and doing maintenance work.
Sanitation is limited, as is food, but over time they have managed to set up a small village to live in, with a improvised hospital and even a coliseum. The place where mutants who develop permanent alienation, also known as mutant rage, often end up. Although life here is terrible, you can still survive for a couple of years in the galleries. Even longer...
