The count's tenth consort [Ariel] [Halloween] [AU] [Vampire]

The castle was in a semi-darkness of oscillating shadows. Although there were a few candelabras scattered around the window sill and the desk, the two great sources of light were: A corner fireplace and the moon itself shining in a cloudless night sky. Although I had forewarned myself of the danger involved, the minutes I spent alone in the room gave me a suffocating sensation. As if the family portraits hanging on the walls were watching me as I walked around the room, or the shadows of the objects moved by their own desire. I couldn't say that I had seen anything directly and clearly, but I couldn't get the feeling of being in imminent danger out of my mind either.
When you had a taste for the supernatural, these kinds of emotions often came over you. My work had taught me to keep a cool head and tempered emotions. No matter how disturbing a situation was, I was just a simple chronicler, recounting experiences with strange forces as truthfully as possible. Emphasising details that no one else reported and uncovering frauds when they were. Some thought I was a crackpot, others appreciated my commitment to such a thankless vocation.
The hinges of the front door creaked, announcing the arrival of someone in the office. I turned to greet the count, who, far from what I had been forewarned, was a handsome young man with a smug smile. Not at all the gloomy description of a sullen, bloodthirsty old man with a penchant for perverse vices.
"So... You must be our illustrious guest. Please make yourself at home." He said, motioning with his bejewelled finger for me to take a seat. Although he seemed like a capricious and carefree man, the way he looked me up and down, I didn't like it at all. He wasn't measuring me by my posture, my possible money or my social class, he was measuring me like prey. I pulled myself further back in the armchair. "I had not been told that there were such beautiful people in this place nowadays."
"I could tell you the same thing. You are an absolute mystery, Count. Everything I have heard about you has turned out to be completely wrong." I tried to make my voice sound firm, but I think it was obvious that the discomfort on my face had long since been evident.
"Please call me Ariel. I have an intuition that we'll become intimate very soon."His eyes glowed with a crimson hue that almost made me jump out of my seat. Unfortunately for him, I'm not one to lose my temper easily. "The villagers get bored during the day and make up peculiar stories. Sometimes they talk about a plague doctor who was buried alive or about lights in the night that nobody knows where they came from. Who knows what they could have said about someone like me."
Although the town had no lack of strange myths and legends, it was precisely this that had brought me here. To find out the truth behind it all and compile it in my memoirs.
"Then you will understand why I am so intrigued by everything about the mansion and the... you." The count squinted as he passed behind me, in an almost vaporous manner. A completely unnatural gesture.
"Come with me." He whispered in my ear. I shuddered, but was unable to refuse. I found his words as appealing as honey to bees. With several gestures he pointed to some portraits that must be of the family. In several of them, the count was seen in strange costumes, some dating back centuries, surrounded by riches and always in singular heroic poses. I would not presume to judge the pastimes of the wealthy, they always tended to be extravagances that someone like me would never understand. "This castle is too big for one person, don't you think?"
"I guess..." I said as I stared at one of the larger pictures. It showed a woman with an angelic face and long blonde hair. A woman so beautiful that she could be the object of anyone's desire.
"That was my first wife," he announced, seeing my interest in the painting, "she was a lovely woman. But, unfortunately, she passed away a long time ago. She was... how shall I put it... boring? simple? Suitable for high society, but not for the nightlife. She withered. She was a rose in a field of thorns."
"Were you married?" The count answered with a loud laugh.
"Of course... Many times." This time it was he who pointed to a painting in which he could be seen on a velvet upholstered chair, with his shirt open and a couple of men flanking him on either side. "These were the Rodrick brothers, two passionate sailors with a wealth of stories to tell. But... Unfortunately, seafarers tend to be very unfaithful. I had to get rid of them."
"Get rid of them?" Ariel gave a relaxed smile as she rolled a ring on her middle finger.
"Don't be shocked, sailors come and go... You know... But why don't you keep watching? This one..." He said, pointing his finger... "She was one of my great hopes. A wild woman, the daughter of merchants... They wanted to put her in a convent. You can imagine what kind of woman she was and how much fun we had together. She was... almost perfect. But very reckless. Some villagers caught her in the night, accused her of witchcraft and burned her. Something really horrible..."
"What a barbarity! No one in this century would do such a thing." No matter how superstitious the peasants or the church itself, such terrible practices had long since been banished.
"And who says otherwise? " he laughed and then pulled out a couple of wine glasses and a bottle from a nearby bureau. Without a word he poured the contents into both containers and offered me one of the glasses. "Come, I have a picture I am particularly interested in showing you..." This time he turned away from the main wall and went to a particularly small canvas on the mantelpiece. "This is a very recent one. As I have already told you, living in such a big house alone with the company of an old housekeeper is very depressing. Some months ago I visited a famous portrait painter and asked him for something most singular..." My heart stopped as I saw the charcoal lines of a face that looked very familiar to me.
"What kind of joke is this? " I asked, taking several steps backwards. My face, the same one I could see in a mirror was staring back at me. Ariel's hands were cold and grabbed me by the shoulders so that I couldn't go back any further.
"A joke? No, of course not. Do you think it's a coincidence that you came to me? No, of course not. I looked into your interest in the paranormal. I'm sure you'd make a most entertaining couple, full of amusing stories and adventures we could undertake together. But I also know that you could proceed with caution, something that in my world is VERY important," the count was very close to me, I could feel his voice rocking me like a lullaby. I closed my eyes and let myself be carried away for a second " Drink, "he said in an even more intimate tone " drink so that we can be together." My hands were shaking and threatened to throw the glass to the floor. Slowly, I raised the glass until it rested on my lower lip. The taste of rust was the only thing that woke me from that transient little trance.
"But! what is this?!" I shrieked as I tried to get the disgusting taste out of my mouth. Deep down I could sense what was going on, but I was unable to process it, "this is..."
"A necessary evil," the count's smile widened to show his full set of teeth, one with particularly pronounced canines, "I promise it hurts less than it can be pleasant," his cold fingertips brushed the hair away from my neck. I wanted to scream, I wanted to run away, I wanted to do so many things, but I didn't get to do any of them. His teeth sank into my flesh and Ariel drank from me. The pain only lasted a small moment, then it was like drinking alcohol or maybe some kind of drug I had never tried before. My mind became clouded, my body felt light, I felt like dancing, playing, kissing... maybe even tasting again that drink he had offered me before. In that moment of absolute intoxication I was unable to understand the magnitude of what was happening. But it wouldn't take me long to understand, not when hunger scratched my insides and my skin became stiff and cold as a corpse.
