Lore: The Desert
🕑 Added 2022-04-28 10:00:04 +0000 UTC
It's an almost uninhabited extension of land due to wars, lack of resources and dangerous conditions such as extreme temperatures, radiation and lack of sanitation. In most cases it's recommended to avoid traveling through these lands if you are unfamiliar with the terrain and the dangers to which you may be exposed. However, it's a place of passage between cities and it's not uncommon to see vehicles passing through these areas. Due to the lack of jurisprudence on this plain, it has no roads or infrastructure.
The desert in comparison to the big cities is immensely larger, covering almost the entire continent.
The toxic river
From an aerial view the river is an immense scar that begins in St. Gabriel and disappears into myriad branches and subway aquifers halfway down. Due to the lack of mountains and geographical features, with the exception of sedimentary rock formations, it's a wide-spanning but shallow river, which tends to form meanders and marshes and whose velocity is barely perceptible in some stretches. Providing the stagnation of some on the hottest days.
Its waters are not suitable for bathing or human consumption. They usually have a characteristic muddy brown color that becomes darker and more opaque as it gets closer to its source and in some cases it is dangerous to even approach, due to the unpleasant vapors and odors it gives off.
Flora and Fauna
Despite the fact that the terrain has been polluted for quite a few centuries, the climate has improved considerably, favoring the growth of a scarce native flora and fauna. The temperature has become more moderate and certain kinds of plants have become resistant to the river toxins, providing food for the surviving creatures and giving them a certain immunity to some kind of substances. Most of the animals are small rodents, some kinds of lizards and snakes (especially poisonous ones), large arachnids and insects. There have also been sightings of packs of common dogs, the result of human breeding and neglect. These creatures are generally difficult to see and prefer to avoid encountering people.
Although there's a scarcity of species belonging to the fish and bird families, some types of small to medium-sized scavenger birds can be seen near mouse or lizard burrows. As for fish, they are mostly unclassifiable creatures that are strongly recommended not to be consumed under any circumstances. Mostly deformed and with mixed characteristics never seen before in a family due to the continuous action to waste and mutagenic agents. Although some species with consistent features have been sighted in recent times such as the triple-fin desert puppies or luminescent calandines. Despite their unpleasant appearance, they are mostly non-aggressive or non-aggressive fishes.
The flora, however, has grown exponentially from habitats composed almost solely of fungi, some types of mold and plankton, to a rich variety of scrub plants such as encelia, thistle and hawthorn. There are also large numbers of cacti and new kinds of algae.
However, it's estimated that almost 80% of the desert is completely unpopulated and although an expansion is expected in the coming years, almost all the creatures are concentrated in a two kilometer stretch of the river, where pollutants are absorbed by the porous conditions of the soil and geographical features provide shelter and shade to the creatures. There are several studies that would be trying to reinsert larger creatures and plants that have so far been bred in captivity, in an attempt to control the advance of erosion.
Abandoned City
A large ghost town lies at a midpoint between St. Gabriel and the Inhospitable Lands Base, which was abandoned due to wars and the atomic threat. It can be seen from afar due to its large, partially collapsed skyscrapers and old communications structures. Some areas of this huge city are no longer dangerous and its radiation levels have dropped drastically. Still, it's recommended not to go near the area and not to keep any objects from this region. More than one scrap dealer tried to sell some relics in the market causing several serious cases of radiation contamination and even mutations. On the other hand, the age of the structures and their lack of maintenance are almost a major risk.
🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧
