This was a fine post. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Oh and incidentally, one of the hottest topics around Proto-Indo-European is where it was originally spoken. (Dr. Crawford references the area around the Black Sea, which is the current leading contender.) So I guess Riddley Scott, the screenwriter for Doctor Strange, and a co-creator of Lost say it was actually...space?!

Prometheus, a movie I was dumb enough to see in a theater way back in 2012, actually pulls this same plot device. David (the android whose head eventually pops off; there must be one in every Riddley Scott space movie) learns Proto-Indo-European in order to communicate with the 9-foot purple space people. When David tries to actually USE the language, I think the purple spaceman replied by ripping off his head, which might have been his way of saying his accent needed some work. Considering that the space people were supposed to be the creators of (modern?) humanity, this would presumably move the calendar way back beyond the 3,000 B.C. to 4,500 B.C. time range in which it would be reasonable to even try to communicate to with anyone in Proto-Indo-European. So, if anything, I think this makes Prometheus even stupider. Where Serviss thought that PIE (as we linguists sometimes call it) could remain unchanged for 5,000 or 6,000 years, the screenwriters for Prometheus apparently thought that PIE wouldn't change for HUNDREDS of thousands of years.
