Mothers Day
🕑 Added 2022-05-08 01:18:23 +0000 UTCIt’s Mother’s Day here in Australia. My first one as one, and it’s weird because I’ve spent the last years flinching away from it.
I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about Mother’s Day in the future, and I don’t know if I get to decide, but I think how I feel is maybe at least a little bit under my control - particularly about arbitrary dates like this.
For example, I’ve already changed my mind about Hallmark holidays (Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, whatever day). I used to be of the smug school of thought that said because these are artificial constructions fluffed up by capitalism to sell fluffy teddy bears, I would determinedly avoid them, I would refuse to bow to the arbitrary designation of a day to care about a thing. “We should care about that thing *every day*, not just when the television says we should!” I would declare.
But then I realised that actually, we don’t. That’s not how people work - we can’t make every day a special effort day, and nor would we want to. Christmas every day would be a horror show. Though of course we can try to make a decent effort at loving and giving each other all the time, the breakfast-in-bed and no-you-stay-there-and-let-me-do-it-for-once days have to come along infrequently enough that they’re fun. So we need to make special occasions, because it’s nice to have special things. And if we’re going to have a special day, unless you’re going to sit down and plan a whole alternative calendar of appreciation days (actually not a bad idea, maybe a project for a time when I have more time) why not the day that everyone else is having it (OR, and here’s my trick, maybe sometimes the day after? When the chocolate is 50% off? Maybe I can convince Laser that every big holiday is the day after it actually is…

Happy Mother's Day
I was initially distracted by the thought of 50% off chocolate, which then went to 50% off Haigh’s chocolate- which I can’t get in here in the U.K. and miss from my time in Australia. *drifts off* In the U.K. Mother’s Day was back in March. Not sure why it’s different from the rest of the world. Probably just to be different from the rest of the world. But I guess it demonstrates that symbols only have the meaning you apply to them. You are in control of what weight you give to these things. And I suspect your feelings towards days like today will change over time. So, squeeze tightly the people around you that you love, and slide into a diabetic coma from too much chocolate. X
I have the same thoughts about capitalist conspiracies to buy more chocolate and gifts. However I surrendered long ago to mother's day because the mother's in my family feel left out if I go through with it while all other moms around them are "celebrated". So if it makes them happy, I'll do it for them, period. It makes my wife, sister, mom, grandma, aunties happy, and I'll do it just for that and I'm happy that they are. Screw Valentine's day though. The day where the streets are screwed. All prices of chocolate, flowers, perfumes etc. are jacked up. A lot of people are over the top phoney and fake and cringe corny and ruin the color red for the sane ones just to get some. All restaurants are insanely overbooked, and all restaurant quality is compromised and it's workers stretched to their limits and beyond for possibly no extra pay, just because someone randomly mandated that people engage in procreation resulting activities. I actually made it a condition in my relationship with my wife long ago: I don't do Valentine's day. If she wants a day to do something special other than birthdays, anniversaries etc we can do the 15h of Feb. Just not the 14th because we will spend a lot of money and effort just to be massively annoyed by the experience of the day. And she was fine with it from day 1. Anyway, happy mother's day Alice 😅🙈

Thanks for sharing, Alice. I love those little baby toes! Is she stuffing them in her mouth all the time now? Both of our twins have really gotten into their toes since they hit 6 months a few weeks ago, but especially the girl. She's obsessed with them. Hope you have a great first mother's day! It'll be my partner's 4th now but 1st since we went from 1 to 3 kiddos. Unsurprisingly, I'll be up late after I get the twins down to finish some wrapping. Had so many plans to get everything done early, but it's so hard to actually carve out time with a 3 year old and two 6 month olds.

Given mother's day is a couple of weeks after Easter, all the remaining chocolate eggs actually are now 50% off at Foodland. Yes, I did just do the Sunday shop. Well guessed.

Husband and I treat our getting together anniversary as Valentine's. Ex and his family used to celebrate Solstice as Christmas, which I loved doing and did for years after we split but it fell away over time. My exec functioning issues mean even if I really really want to do something like catch up with someone I love, I don't remember to do it unless it's in my diary somehow. I moved back home to Australia from UK to see my elderly grandfather more often but even living 15 mins drive away I only managed to do that after I made a weekly appointment to see him. I love special days be they weekly or annually, but yeah I'd rather pick the date myself too
