🕑 Added 2020-09-16 04:18:42 +0000 UTCI found this little diary from when I was little. It says “DIARY” and “PRIVATE” and “Keep out Henry that includes you”.
It has a little lock on it, and I’m not sure if I have the key any more. I’m wondering if I should break the lock, find someone who can pick the lock or leave the secrets of little me to the tides of history.
I’ve found so much old stuff, unpacking boxes at my dad’s house. My goodness I’ve written so many letters that I never sent. Love letters, Thankyou letters, getting back in touch letters, staying in touch letters that I literally wrote while losing touch with those people. What a sad and odd thing that is, so many of my friends from the past have literally hundreds of pages of light blither and bad drawings from a me who wasn’t brave or organised enough to send them. It’s not like I can send them now. I don’t feel like one SHOULD throw away letters, but what about ones you never sent?
I’m going to go look for a tiny key now. Though it wouldn’t be entirely beyond my young self to have locked up an empty diary for the shits and giggles of posterity or to achieve some arcane end in one of my long running serial daydreams.

As Tim said, those locks are INCREDIBLY simple - I've taken up lock sport as a hobby (lock picking for fun) & could probably get into it in aout 20 seconds... the keys for those are usually just little squares. Do you even remember what was so secret & private? Might be interesting to see what teenage Alice was thinking 🤔

Most of those little locks were extremely simple - you could probably pick it with a bent paperclip (feel for something that clicks into a different position to the one it's in) and you could probably lock it again in the same way, out of deference to the feelings of your younger self. But you didn't write that stuff because you didn't want it to be read, I suspect, if only by your older self

I have a hard time throwing things away too. Letters, flowers, and other stuff. It is like if it is there then the people are not gone.
