A little discussion about rivalry in romance stories
🕑 Added 2022-01-25 06:19:48 +0000 UTCI was reading a few romance mangas here and there just to get some reference for future stories. Some of them are fine, but some of them made me question whether I should use these for future chapters.
As you read Chapter 3, I was teasing Serena in the final page as a "potential" rival or probably not. But I am going a different direction on how to handle her in the story and make her a bit unique in the upcoming chapter and making sure avoiding some of the common tropes of a love rival like you see in the genre.
However, there's is a matter of making a male rival that competes against Calem for Hex's affection. I did have a draft/sketches for this character, and he is an existing character in the game, but (spoiler alert) he an NPC character that you battle in XY. But I'm starting feeling a bit hesitant to use this character since he's just an NPC in game and he doesn't exist in other media and doesn't have any significance in the story.
So using this NPC who has no history with the characters or any significance at all just for the sake of Calem's "Love" Rival makes me think twice on using it. But at the same time, I want to ask your opinion on the matter, whether you vote on the polls or make a discussion in the comments section. I would love to hear your thoughts about it.
edit: While the character in question doesn't have any backstory, I'm planning to add one in the specifically for him, and he is technically an Original character in terms of backstory. So they kind of a history together.

Oh geez thanks for the pressure XD But with all seriousness, I'm trying my best not to fall for those common issues to make the characters so frustrating for the readers. Even with the trope of a love rival, I'll at least make them likeable for the reader. Still a work in progress but I hope it works out in the end :) And glad you love my series! And also glad you love the comic dub of it! The team did they're very best on it! Expect an update on the next chapter soon! :D

I'm new here (Got into your series via a Comic Dub and fell in LOVE with it.), but I went with the 1st option. As a guy who's found nothing but absolute joy from the 1st 4 chapters, I feel like you can pull this off somehow. You're obviously doing your best. And IDK how you'll take this comment I'm about to say but I'll do it anyway: I feel like you'd have to be an absolute genius to SOMEHOW screw this up what with all the research you're doing to avoid pitfalls.

Oh, trust me. One thing I will REALLY avoid is making Hexy or Calem portrayed negatively or frustrating for the readers. I've read a lot of stories for references and the characters always ended up being hated or intolerable to deal with because of those tropes. One thing I will say is this. Expect the unexpected, but not the type that infuriates you, but makes you go "Excuse me what?". But in a good way :D

It's good to know you know the bad tropes that come with this type of inclusion. Just be careful when having Hexy start deciding on two guys' attention immediately after dating Calem as it can portray her negatively. I doubt you will have her starting to think she deserves better because she already has that on Calem XD (Champion, loaded and handsome). It can be interesting, just be careful on making Hexy unbearable D:
