Yeah, I like that Demonic Cultivator isn't just "oh this guy has a specific cultivation that is inherently evil", it's applied to ALL cultivators who do it whether or not they have to, because in the end it doesn't matter if you kill innocent people for magical reasons or mundane ones. It's a more... I guess, legal, moral ? definition of the term than a spiritual one, and I suspect it's been broadened by the current Imperial dynasty which seems way more reasonable than the usual. Which makes way more sense and is more interesting to read about than the usual "everyone's some flavor of murderous asshole, but these guys specifically are bad due to spiritual mumbo jumbo". IIRC it's also much more in line with the first appearance of the demonic cult (Ming Cult) in Xianxia, which was just some cult who were slandered by the dynasty they were fighting against as they had a different belief system/religion and were against the current government. So basically, in OG Xianxia the government decides who's demonic, it's not some inherent magical property of a given cultivator. EDIT: Although I suspect Shanyi specifically is a hardliner on what constitutes demonic cultivation from what we've seen when she was teaching/berating Jian Shizhe. I think a lot of cultivators would be more on Lingui Mei's side of not really giving a shit about mortals, though not for the same reasons.

This Xianxia world, or maybe just our main character, has a much broader definition of demonic cultivator than I’ve ever seen before. I guess that comes with the bureaucratic culture of cultivation: cultivators are expected to fulfill their civic duty. I really like this version of cultivation, even if it still isn’t perfect.
