Justin noticed his punk neighbor on his porch just as Wayne, his “friend-with-benefits,” turned the conversation toward a relationship. He clenched a fist as he approached the front door, ready to toss the skateboarding loser onto the street, vape and all. The distraction gave him just the out he needed to end the awkward talk.
“Sorry, babe,” Justin said as he undid the top buttons of his work shirt to let more of his muscle show. “That douchebag from next door is here. I’ll have to continue this later.”
“Is he really?” Wayne asked. “Or do you just want to avoid answering what EXACTLY we are?”
Justin shrugged his big shoulders. “You know I love these talks,” he said with a flimsy tone. “I’ll call back, I promise.”
“You don’t even know the meaning of that word,” Wayne shot back. “But whatever. Bye.”
Justin hung up the phone, gave himself a look in the mirror–huge and angry, just as he’d hoped–and reached for the door handle. Just before he turned it, he heard the punk jabbering on with his buddies.
“Yeah, he’s a big roided out gorilla,” his neighbor said, “but he’s got a SWEET pool.”
“You think he’ll let us use it?” asked one of the friends.
“I think he won’t have a choice.”
This was Justin’s cue to move. He threw open the door and folded his arms across his wide, burly chest. Two decades of powerlifting had made him a tank of a man, easily the combined bodyweight of the three skinny 21-year olds on his porch.
“What was that?” Justin said, loudly stomping out onto the porch to adequately convey his 290 lb body to these trespassers.
“I was just saying,” his neighbor–ponytailed, scruffy-bearded, scarecrow-bodied, stinking of weed–said as he held up a hand and snapped. “...that we’re using your pool, and you’re not doing a thing about it.”
Justin had every intention of snapping back with a threatening tone, but he felt frozen. He blinked anxiously as his tongue failed to respond–as did the rest of his big body.
“Damn, Derrick!” said one of the neighbor’s skinny friends. “He’s really not doing anything!”
Justin struggled, his face contorting, but he couldn’t speak or move. Derrick snapped again.
“Get inside,” he ordered. Justin’s heart pounded as his body obeyed. As he walked back into his house, the punks came with him. He heard the door slam shut.
“What are we going to do to him now?” one of them asked.
“WE are going to go swimming,” Derrick said. “But this dummy needs something to keep him busy while we help ourselves to his fridge.”
“Make him jerk off for like four hours straight!” one of them suggested.
“No, make him do, like 1000 pushups. REALLY put some bulk on those big fucking arms!”
“Guys,” Derrick said, walking around the immobile man, his cocky strut conveying how in control he felt at that moment. “Let’s ask him: big man… what’s your name? Tell us your name, stud.”
“Justin,” Justin blurted out. He could say no more.
“AH! Justin, that’s right,” Derrick said. He took a puff on his vape, then exhaled sweet-smelling smoke into Justin’s face. “Hope you don’t mind if I vape in here, Justin. Nice place, by the way! Anyway, what is it you WANT to do right now?”
“I want to kick the living shit out of all three of you!” Justin hadn’t meant to say it, but after the words left his mouth, he realized it was the truth. It was like Derrick could get answers from him whether or not he wanted to talk.
“Wow, he’s really mad!” the shorter of Derrick’s friends, a chubby guy with a sparse mustache and greasy hair, said.
“May look like a big bear,” Derrick said with a wink, “but he’s just a little pup, right, buddy?”
Justin panicked as he started to sink. His eyeline dropped quickly, his clothes seeming to stretch longer and baggier around him. In a moment the three punks were actually looking DOWN at him… and then he couldn’t see. He was tangled inside his shirt. He struggled around, yipping and whimpering, unable to get his body to move the way he wanted to.
Then Derrick lifted the shirt up. He stared WAY UP at the enormous college kids. Derrick reached for him and in a panic, Justin started to scurry away, but huge hands wrapped around him and lifted him effortlessly.
It felt wrong to be so light. His body felt wrong, twitching and wiggling in unfamiliar ways. His heart pounded in his ears. He wanted to talk again, but he could only make a high-pitched screech… His tongue was so unresponsive, and his teeth seemed foreign. There was no way he could make words.
He froze when Derrick carried him into the bathroom and held him before a mirror. It took him several seconds to process what he was seeing: the reflection was of Justin holding a scruffy little chihuahua. Justin kicked and squirmed, and the little dog in the mirror kicked and squirmed.
No… it couldn’t be possible. Justin’s blood went cold as he started to process that he couldn’t feel his hands, his arms and legs didn’t feel any different… and he was so small, his normally smooth body covered in scraggly hair. Somehow he was a dog!
Derrick carried him into the yard and gave him a gentle shove as he slammed the door shut. Justin whirled around and barked wildly at the door, trying to jump up to reach the handle. It was too high, not to mention that he had no idea what he would do if he could reach it. He could heard the punks rummaging around in his house. He needed to get in there!
Overwhelmed by his anxiety, he felt a drive to do a lap around his yard. He was panicked, yipping wildly, but the fences were too high. He was trapped.
The door opened and the three punks, carrying Justin’s beers and some chips from his cabinet, strutted into the yard. They had changed into his shorts, all of them far too big on their skinny bodies even with the drawstrings pulled tight. Derrick wore one of Justin’s stringer tanks, which usually hugged his burly torso like a glove. It looked like limp spaghetti, barely covering Derrick’s pale, soft physique.
“Hey, boy, fetch!” Derrick said, pitching a ball at the fence. Despite himself, Justin ran for it, snatching the ball up and feeling pure satisfaction as he ran back to Derrick, wagging his tail wildly.
No! Fuck this punk! Justin wanted to bite the man who had done this to him, but Derrick pitched the ball and Justin ran for it. After searching the grass for it, he turned around, frustrated, and realized that Derrick still had the ball. He felt like a moron as he trudged back sadly. Derrick dangled the ball back and forth. Justin’s head felt attached to it. Then Derrick pitched it again. Justin’s heart leapt as he ran to where he thought it was… but once again, he couldn’t find it. He turned around, crestfallen, to see the three punks laughing wildly as he tossed the ball casually in his hand.
Justin barked wildly. They were drinking his beers! Wearing his clothes! One of the punks did a cannonball in the pool. The splash hit Justin. He shook his whole body. Derrick stood and walked toward him.
“Puppy want to swim?” he said, snatching up Justin before his little legs could get him away. He easily carried Justin and tossed him into the water. For a moment, Justin felt pure terror as he went airborn, then splashed down hard. Instincts kicked in and he found his way to the surface, paddling with his little legs until he reached the stairs leading out of the shallow end. He walked from the pool feeling his saturated fur hanging heavily off his sides. He felt like a wet mop.
“Hey Derrick!” said the chubby one. “What if he poops in the pool?”
“Good point,” Derrick said. “Hey, puppy, go lick yourself until I say otherwise.”
Justin had to do what he was told. He walked into a shady part of the yard and started licking his hind legs. He couldn’t stop, no matter how sick he got of the taste of his wet doggy body. He hated looking at himself, seeing the little dog dick he had now. When would this humiliation end?
What seemed like hours later, Derrick approached him and pointed a finger sternly into his face. “You’ll turn back after we’re gone, but you won’t tell a soul about this. And when you see me, you’ll act like we’re friends.” He snapped his fingers and walked away.
Justin found himself still licking himself hours later, when he realized he was a man again–a naked man, licking his thickly muscled quad in his backyard. He awkwardly stood and walked inside, dismayed to see the fridge wide open. All his beers were gone and his cabinets had been ransacked. His kitchen was a horrible mess. He grimaced at the muddy footprints all over his carpet. He picked up his phone, fully intending to call the police, but his hand froze just as he started to dial.
*
Weeks had passed since the incident. Justin pulled back into his driveway. Wayne sat in the passenger seat. Both muscular men were sweaty from their recent gym session. Wayne reached over and gave Justin’s delt a squeeze.
“Too sore to do a little post-workout messing around?” Wayne, who was just as built as Justin but about six inches shorter, said with a wink.
Justin smiled. “Never,” he said, leaning in for a kiss. As he pulled away from their embrace, Wayne pointed past him.
“Isn’t that your neighbor?” he asked. Justin turned to see Derrick just over the fence between their yards. Derrick let out a massive cloud of vape smoke and winked as Justin looked over. Despite himself, the big man started emphatically waving.
As they walked inside, Wayne asked, “Don’t you hate that guy? You bitch about him all the time.”
“He’s not so bad,” Justin said, although inside he screamed at himself, fighting against the silent restraints that prevented him from voicing any negative thoughts about Derrick.
Justin closed the door and started to lead Wayne up the stairs by the hand. Wayne lagged behind.
“I really hate having to revisit this conversation so much,” he said, crossing his beefy arms, “but… are we a thing? Or aren’t we?”
“We’re a THING,” Justin said. “SOME thing. I just don’t know what yet.”
“You don’t KNOW,” Wayne said, “or don’t WANT to know.”
“Why do we have to name this something?” Justin said, feeling the mood to fool around starting to dissipate. “Why is it so important to put a label on us spending time together?” His brawny shoulders sagged, their workout’s energizing effects quickly subsiding.
“You know, I have a lot of dudes ready to take me out,” Wayne said. He produced his phone and started to thumb across its screen, as if he were perusing his other options at that moment. “You really wouldn’t be jealous if I started seeing someone else?”
“Look,” Justin said. “I feel like you’re just trying to get a rise out of me here… I’m going to drink my postworkout shake, take a shower, and afterward… let’s either have a discussion, or fuck, whichever you’re in the mood for.”
Wayne sighed as Justin trudged up the stairs. “We both know you’ll only accept the second option!” he called after. Justin ignored it and hopped in the shower.
He walked out, a towel wrapped around his thick waist, but froze as he realized Wayne was talking to someone. He hustled down the stairs, still only towel-dressed, to find his fuck buddy standing at the open front door. Justin’s blood went cold when he saw Derrick standing outside, this time with five buddies huddled around him.
“So he said we could come in and use the pool,” Justin said. “That’s cool with you, right?”
“Well, if it’s cool with him,” Wayne said, his voice sounding a little robotic. “Then it’s fine with me!”
Justin tried to open his mouth to protest, but he couldn’t say a word. The moment Derrick’s eyes met him, the punk pointed right at him, then pointed at the ground. That was all it took; Justin’s body shrank until the towel came loose. An instant later he was a little chihuahua again, yipping at Wayne’s feet. Sadly, the other bodybuilder didn’t acknowledge that anything about Justin had changed.
“Why don’t you take the dog for a walk,” Derrick said, handing a small bag to Wayne, “and we’ll just hang out here for awhile. Sound good?”
Wayne’s eyes were a little glazed as he nodded. He bent over and produced a collar and a leash from the bag. Justin could only yip sadly as the collar slipped over his neck. The leash yanked at him and he found himself trotting beside Wayne, bewildered by how many of his little steps it took to keep up with his now building-sized boyfriend.
He yipped as he thought the word–even in this situation he had to reaffirm to himself that Wayne was not his boyfriend–but then he fell behind, and felt a rough yank on the leash to keep up. He scurried along, panicked about what was going on at his house but with no way to intervene.
Justin whimpered as he found himself approaching a parking meter and raising his leg to pee on it. “Good boy!” Wayne said in a condescending voice. It got worse when he squatted on a patch of grass and started emptying his bowels. He hadn’t even known it was going to happen! But here was, now an animal, with his animal instincts taking over. “Oh, you’re a stinky guy, aren’t you?” Wayne mocked as he picked up Justin’s pathetically small droppings in a green poop bag.
Justin’s anxiety spiked again when he realized that Wayne had brought him to a dog park. He backed away, yipping nervously, but Wayne urged him beyond the gates, unclipping his leash and shooing him off to play with other dogs. Justin ran around in a panic, daunted by how big the other animals were. He yipped wildly when a GIGANTIC pit bull leaned down and sniffed his butt so aggressively it lifted Justin off his hind legs. Why the hell wasn’t Wayne making sure the bigger dogs left him alone?
He got his answer when he turned around and saw Wayne now sharing his bench with Roberto, a well-built bodybuilding prettyboy they both knew from the gym. They were sitting awfully close. Was this one of the guys Wayne was talking about? Justin suddenly felt a surge, an incredible need to defend his property, and ran toward Wayne, yipping wildly. Wayne just sighed as Justin approached, scooping him up and stroking the back of his neck as he continued talking. The action did calm him down some, although Justin still wasn’t happy.
“I guess what I’m saying is,” Wayne said, staring into Roberto’s eyes, “I’m actually available now. So if you want to take me out on that date… I’d be happy to.”
Justin had to crane his neck to look up at the powerfully built latino hunk. Roberto had never looked quite so MASSIVE to him before! He yipped loudly, but Roberto just laughed.
“I think your little friend doesn’t like me,” Roberto said, roughly petting Justin’s head. Justin bared his teeth and snapped, but felt a blast from a water bottle in Wayne’s other hand. The shot was cold and sobering. He shivered and stared at the ground, feeling lower than ever.
“He’ll learn to love you,” Wayne said. He set Justin back on the ground. Justin ran toward Roberto, barking again, but caught another blast of water in the side of his head. He scurried away, still yipping, until a labrador started to give him chase. Justin ran around, shrieking, but nobody seemed to notice his peril.
Finally, Wayne approached him and reattached the leash, signaling to Justin that they’d be leaving. Justin snapped and snarled as he saw Wayne and Roberto gathered in a meaty embrace, but they ignored him. Why wouldn’t they? He was just a dumb little dog.
Thankfully, Wayne carried Justin the rest of the way home. His little legs were exhausted and he was emotionally battered from watching his man with someone else without being able to do anything about it. When I’m a man again, I’ll tell him I want to be exclusive, Justin decided. His heart sank as Wayne opened the front door to his house and Derrick answered.
“Oh, hey!” Derrick said, clearly a little drunk. “Hey, man, we were actually thinking of extending the party for a few… uh, weeks, maybe…” He giggled. A din of activity hummed behind Derrick. What the hell were they doing in Justin’s house? “Do you think you could keep the pup with you until we’re done here? Little dog like that is just gonna get, y’know… stepped on here.”
Wayne nodded, his eyes glazed over again. “Sure thing, man! I’d love to take care of this little guy.”
“Girl,” Derrick said. He pointed at Justin, staring straight into his eyes. “She’s a girl,” he emphasized. Justin whimpered and yipped as he felt the disconcerting sensation of his organs rearranging. He looked down, horrified to see that his little doggie unit had vanished.
“I’ll take good care of her,” Wayne said, walking away with a tight grip on Justin.
The little dog panicked as he realized he would have to stay as a dog like this for… weeks? Was that what Derrick had said? His thoughts were so unfocused. He felt a strange urge in his body, a yearning need to… no. It couldn’t be. He whined as they walked past the dog part, suddenly feeling a raging desire to go find that labrador or the pit bull again.
“You calm down,” Wayne said sternly. “I don’t need you going crazy now that you’re in heat again.”
The most Justin could hope for was Wayne allowing him to sleep in his bed. He shuddered at the idea that Roberto could be taking that spot. He wondered how long he’d be able to go avoiding the dog park while he felt the overpowering urge to flash his rear at every dog he saw. As he whimpered, Wayne rubbed the back of his neck, calming him.
“That a girl,” Wayne said. Something about his voice made Justin feel peaceful… for now.
