When I was about ten, I dressed up as Ace Frehley from KISS. On the downside, this was when he was in his sparkly disco look. On the plus side, I had an aunt who dressed the mannequins at JC Penney, so we had crazy access to materials. The costume looked fantastic. Halloween night, the local motorcycle gang’s house was on the route. We neighborhood kids were scared to death of this house, but … candy! As soon as one of the bikers saw me, he grabbed me and dragged me inside to show me off to all the others. It was your stereotypical bikers’ den and I’ll never forget any sight or sound or smell of it. My mom, of course, was horrified, but I got extra candy and a great story to tell.

Ten years ago, I was a first-year teacher (a universally difficult experience), and my first evaluation meeting with my principal fell on Halloween. I love dressing up (and working in a school means that I have no reason not to indulge that love). However, that meant I went into my one-on-one dressed as a peacock, complete with glittery green eye makeup and a full tail. It was a glorious costume, but I was still a nervous wreck...

I was about seven the Halloween after the first Scream movie came out, and there was a lot of Ghostface going around the trick or treat that year. Tiny me is walking home in the dark with my bag full of sweets and someone in a full Ghostface costume and mask (probably a teen kid) leaps out from behind a tree and demands all my sweets at the end of a (fake) knife. Tiny me did not approve, whacked Ghostface between the legs with my bag of sweets, and ran home. Still makes me laugh.

I will never forget the year I went trick-or-treating as a very deflated pumpkin. My costume began as an orange trash bag (my head sticking out the top) filled with newspaper, complete with black felt for the face, and a stem-shaped hat. As the night went on, I lost a little newspaper at every house, and by the last house, I was completely deflated, my pumpkin face a sagging mess. I thought it was very funny, and I think people felt sorry for me, because I got extra candy!

One year I went as the puppet from Saw, complete with a radio flyer kids' tricycle (I was 25 years old and 6'3"), and spent the entire time at a friend's Halloween party slowly pedaling into the back of rooms, tilting my head, and staring at people until they noticed
