Chapter 99 - Fall With Purpose

Luc and Michael are almost obnoxiously-connected as characters, they've got about as much linking/mirroring symbolism as I can put in without the pair of them actually detonating from sheer narrative stress. You won't find resolution in the Annals, though - one of my explicit rules for that epigraph series is that it can clarify, but it cannot introduce revelatory material about Luc. Everything we learn there must be an elaboration of something Michael already knows (although in the spirit of our Mind Jeorg, it may provide us answers that we "already know but haven't articulated yet"). Michael didn't really contemplate killing Karl, although he certainly could have - and for many people it would have been a natural progression of thought after all the shit he's pulled. Michael was being honest when he told Karl that he wants nothing of his, though, and that includes his soul. Just like with Sever, he's skirting the issue to avoid that inevitable consequence.

Spark was the only soul that staggered Luc, it's the soul that most concerns Luc and Michael, and it's the abuse and easy power that Michael most feels, the thing that most worries him about a 'soul' rather than the 'michael shaped vessel' as it were. I think the answer is going to lie in him finding his resolution, his answer to what that soul means, and what power over other people means, as that's what that soul represents and is emblematic of, the position he'll end up occupying, where he changes others even without direct violence, or meaning to. Having other people interpret how to serve him and interpret his wishes and having an outsized effect on society while Luc just wants to burn everything down. I've been thinking for a long time how the rest of the world, the souls, and the fights he encounters can be used to infer what the narrative arc for Michael must be. Salah represents one sort of thing, Leire another. Luc, however, he's the personal part for Michael -- and I think the way in which he is responding to his fear of what the OneSoul means, and how he is responding with direct violence, and being a knife through the world order and society. Well a good antagonist has something to show the hero, and in OP/Superhero fics, where the MC is generally actually on the side of the status quo, they need to still learn something about what should change in a less violent way from the villain. I think Luc's annals should hopefully help me gain some clarity on where Michael is heading. Probably like half a chapter before Michael learns it too. Also, the newspaper article was great here. At first I thought it meant we were skipping the direct consequences, but then as a piece of foreshadowing it was great. I don't know if it was intentional, but there was a huge foreshadowing moment with the AWOL Karl in the article, and the four unspecified deaths... I was very surprised when Karl didn't die and Michael didn't have to deal with getting the Sever-lite soul that most tormented him, and his dad's low soul.

Mike definitely is faced with making some changes! He got past at least a few stumbling blocks that he had been avoiding before, although by the end I think he's reconsidering his decision to use Spark offensively...

Thanks for the chapter! I'm struggling to think of how Michael will be able to take on Luc as it stands. Could be wildly off the mark, but I feel he needs figure out what he saw when he broke the boulder so many chapters ago, or whatever's changed how Friedrich sees/uses his soul. In any case, fantastic as always!
