Chapter 106 - How Far We've Come

I've kept it pretty peripheral until this chapter, but the experience of seeing the incipient Gharic resistance form against the side she's fighting for is very disconcerting for her. She's made a few comments to that effect, and in this chapter she's confronted with scenarios that hit her a lot closer to where she lives. "They’re going to die and their daughter will grow up broken and shitty, a killer who could have been a thousand better things..." She introduces herself to the couple as *Sera* rather than Sobriquet, because for her this is a demented mirror image of her own past. The small parallels have been stressing her out for a few chapters now, but this is the closest she's been to intervening in a scenario that approximates her own... and she's unable to make any headway because F+L won't acknowledge Sera, instead rejecting the person that Sera became. There's a statement from all the way back in chapter 43 that bears relevance to this chapter (and in particular, Mike's statement about souls changing a person), when she's talking about Clair not long after her death: She paused for a moment, breathing deep, her fingers tracing over the mottled scar on her cheek. “You lose pieces of your life. The wound disfigures you, leaves a stranger in your place - sometimes one you don’t recognize, or even particularly like.” There was another pause. Sobriquet’s fingers touched the back of his hand, lightly. “But it’s still you,” she said. “It never robs you of that. Clair helped me remember that, when it seemed like Sobriquet was all that remained of me. The death, the - indifference. She never lost sight of me, amid it all. To her I was always Sera.”

Sobriquet obviously feels a certain way about the action’s she’s advocating. It’s good to be reminded of the low souls, and I, like Michael, was shocked and unsettled by her execution of the institution men, rather than discussing it. Her talk about peaceful countryside Ghar … she’s very off centre, and I wonder why she’s psyching herself up for ruthlessness. Is it just that there’s a new war coming and trauma … of what secret of Michael’s does she know that she has decided to act on in some way? And what way?

She's still pulling her weight! She's not a freeloader like Vincent.
