Chapter 72 - Balance

TMarkos

Haha, we had to take his character somewhere, and given the trajectory it was either this or Mike dies and Luc is the new MC. I figured the readers would prefer it this way...

alex ayala

fuckin Luc i always hated that damn schizo I knew he was gonna fuck Michael over eventually

TMarkos

Haha, let Luc catch his breath first! Poor dude just had a very full morning. This is where you get your points for being the only person (that I'm aware of) to call Luc having Gerard's soul all the way back in c.63 - well spotted!

Kate Yen

And in today's lesson in writing OP protagonists, we've found out how the author will maintain the stakes. I predict Luc will get Sustain and maybe Sever as well - with the strongest souls for direct combat, he'll let Michael keep clinging to that sweet sweet underdog narrative

Deinos

Yeh well, circumstances. Should've done more team-building excercises, like boat paddling.

TMarkos

This just points to a crippling lack of meaningful communication between all the major players. Maybe some periodic satisfaction surveys, a suggestion box...

Deinos

Ah but I only meant how in a way Luc betrayed Michael's good will and efforts as did Michael with his first friends.

TMarkos

I wouldn't go so far as to say Leire had it coming, but she definitely helped to guide events to their current shape.

Deinos

Karma eh?

TMarkos

Again, some spoiler stuff that I can't get into - but I can answer that Luc had his affinity and bond with Mike before Claude died, since Claude was the one who effected the transfer of the hands. He stated in chapter 28 that he was the one who found Claude in the state that Mike left him, and sometime after that point Claude's soul came to him.

jaen

That I actually remember, but I would have expected this to loom larger, especially given the impact and Sera is not the only prescient-like in vicinity (if I understand Antolin is also a prescient of a kind, with a vested interest in… well… having kept Leire alive), especially as the problem got closer. IIRC they found secret to Leik being staged by basically following Sobriquets spidey sense, right? Sure, this was a hardly expected and dramatic turn of events that wasn't averted only because even demi-gods of secrets have to sleep sometimes, but I would've expected it to be a bigger blip on the "prescient radar" – big enough that an ill-timed nap wouldn't let all hell break loose. So I either give too much credit to prescience in the setting, missed something while reading or someone else was really clogging up the works for this to come to pass. Given Saleh was being rather passive in all of this and Amira's weird appearance in the event that prompted this to spiral out of control… well, it makes you think. Anyway, I'm really shutting up now, looking forward to see where this leads us.

Gardor

So Luc got Mike's hand sewn onto him, did he immediately get a shard of Mike's soul? Was he touching the original evil doctor dude when he died, or did that soul manifest in Luc via a more normal affinity transference? Which was Luc's first Soul, Mike's void soul or the healer soul? Are there now two heart eater souls? What's gonna happen when one of them die, is it dependent on affinity and who dies first? Luc's would go to Mike, but Mike's would go to his favorite bartender?

TMarkos

I will point out that Luc actually *did* pop up on prescient radar - when Galen died Sera noted that he still had undisclosed secrets that had become very significant in the wake of Galen's death. She just misinterpreted that as meaning someone was after Mike's life, not that Luc himself would be spurred to take action by Leire's excesses. I'm glad that this chapter managed to spur so much discussion! It's been a long while in the making and it's really fun for me to see everyone finally get their hands on it.

jaen

Right, an honest mistake that gets you killed because it escalated unpredictably (as evidenced by it not popping up on prescient radar until it was too late) is as good a reason to get offed as any, especially if your nation wasn't on a real war footing since forever. I just didn't have an understanding of Leire making that particular mistake, which could either just be something that's harder in a first person PoV or a reading failure on my part... or maybe someone "helped" Leire make that misstep? Maybe there's more to bbq!Amira laughing like a madman than just her "test and be tested" spirit? Well, I guess I'm gonna cease my ramblings now, what I've read of you so far seems to indicate that you have though through most if not all of that and I should just wait and see xD

TMarkos

Some of this is spoiler territory - but I'll say that there's no guarantee that Mike and Luc are playing by the same rules, given that manifestations of the same soul can change between individuals.

jaen

Interesting what Luc getting the soul just like that means though – is it a skill Mike could have but wouldn't want, Spark doing some soulscience to make it work like that for Luc, or maybe the soul itself manifesting differently for Mike that it's wont to do usually. I guess that last possibility seems the most interesting – maybe the soul is infamous mostly due to circumstances it like to manifest into, not it's inherent nature.

Gardor

And that made affinity between the two of them? Or is the interpersonal relationship, human consciousness driven concept of "affinity" in this world incorrect, and all Mike's soul needs is to be touching someone when they die? Or...Luc's soul, if they're two separate things.

TMarkos

He's been working on this mental break for quite a few chapters now! I thought it was essential that Mike be fairly panicked by the circumstances because he probably could have found a way to intercede if he had a few seconds to get his bearings - but the entire scene happened very quickly, and I wanted to try and take the reader along with the "wtf is even going on" vibe that's going through Mike's head. We'll have to see how Luc develops during the coming chapters :)

TMarkos

Luc and Gerard did have a scene together, in fact - back in chapter 28: Luc knelt beside Gerard, drawing off one glove to feel for a pulse. There was a phantom pain in Michael’s chest, an odd resonance of the ache from before; Luc’s eyes widened and he withdrew his hand sharply, brushing at his fingers while staring at the body. A moment later he noticed Michael watching and shook his head slowly; Gerard was dead. A scene that reads a bit differently now, haha.

TMarkos

Regarding Leire's anticipation, remember that it was entirely Unai's concern for Luc that led to him being in Unai's chambers, and absent his concealed artifex talent he wouldn't really be much of a threat to her - he'd have a much harder time breaking through the glass barriers to actually reach her, for one. She even said that Luc would be worrisome if he ever received Michael's soul, and that she likely would have confined or killed him if it had been Luc rather than Michael who came to her in possession of it. But in the end she had categorized him as "harmless", and trusted Unai's judgment in the matter.

Blorcyn

Luc is not in his right mind, on waking from what he saw and experienced. I wonder if he'll retreat into it, or whether he'll be trying to conciliate when they next meet. Fantastic body horror in this chapter, twice over - with the horrid description of the dead, and then with the choking of Michael by Luc. The panic was really well done, and matched only by Luc reaching down to kill Leire. Very equal and opposite, and In the way that the eight each have their reflections, while in the Safid book, the man stands opposite nothing, it feels very fitting. I wonder if it will be a real half and half split. Luc, Shield and Smoke make three. I'm not looking forward to sobriquet's death, I know that much.

Gardor

So one soul between two people, Luc and Mike? Equally strong? Does Luc have more affinity than Mike with Leire? Was it manual absorption of Leire's soul, that overpowered the affinity Leire constructed between her and Mike? Did Luc even know Gerard?

jaen

FWIW I'm not saying this is off the left field, because Luc was getting demonstrably worse over the time and sometimes people can just… crack due to the littlest thing making the cup of anguish overflow (sorry, I like that idiom even if it doesn't sound right in English), so it all makes sense – it's just that I haven't expected this; the "wait what" comment is my spirit animal for this post ;' )

jaen

Ah, so it was – I guess the limitations of the format are catching up to me xD I vaguely remember the paint metaphor, but not the subject matter. But honestly, I didn't expect the cutie to break just like… that. And while I do have the excuse of hardly ever trying to anticipate twists and turns of a story, I'm retroactively kind of surprised to see that Leire of all people got blindsided by it. I wouldn't have expected here to leave a volatile person with a soul like that alone – did she have no contingencies for Luc, or was she going soft due to Mike's chastening (or maybe she wasn't as shrewd as she was presenting herself to be)? I mean, sure, the odds were demonstrably remote as evidenced by the universe itself not yelling bloody murder ahead of time – otherwise the only thing standing between this monumental frak-up and reality wouldn't have been Sera deciding to have a nap at an inopportune moment xD – but I would assume the history of this world must have at least a few cautionary tales about putting too much stock in prescience. Feel free to disregard this if the ground will be tread in the story in future – after all, making the story show that I'm being dumb right about now is a better use of your time than telling me I'm being dumb right about now xD

TMarkos

I'm glad I can still keep you guessing, haha - it's a fine line to walk between the setup being too obvious and not obvious enough, and I think it was obvious that some sort of conflict might arise between Mike and Luc. The bit about his ability was less-obvious, although someone did guess it correctly as far back as chapter 63, in the patreon comments!

TMarkos

I've got the broad strokes of the entire book sketched out, so I've known that this particular scene was going to happen (in some format, obviously the particulars shifted slightly) since the beginning of the book. I think it's important to have the major character arcs at least somewhat defined so that you can set them up in advance and not just spring changes on people; this is a pretty crazy shift, and if I hadn't spent pretty much all of Luc's time on screen prepping him for this moment then it probably wouldn't work very well.

Alexandria Clarke

How far in advance do you have storyboarded anyway?

Pariah

I mean, i honestly was expecting him to suppress it much like he did with spark, or have it as a turning point for a different arc where he no longer is with the mendiko army, but :behind enemy lines" or something.... i eve co sidered luc attacking michael directly, to stop the cause from happening, definitely not... this

TMarkos

Hopefully it adds a splash of color to re-reads! I try to make things like this coherent across the entire novel, so that it's not entirely out of left field when it comes.

TMarkos

In the first conversation he has with Leire after he discovers the connection with Luc, they discuss the idea (c.52): “Couldn’t we reverse it?” Michael asked. “Undo the bond? Even if it meant losing our hands, it’s a worthy sacrifice for a life.” Another smile flitted across Leire’s face. “A noble thought,” she said. “But no. The paints are mixed; the brush knows only one color. Only death ends affinity. For the bond to break, the mote of human consciousness that anchors it must disappear.”

jaen

Uhhhhh, Mike should've just cut off his hand when he had the chance.

Alexandria Clarke

Yeah thinking back to some of the shit he's said it looks a lot different now

TMarkos

Haha - this was always the plan. I think if you go back and read some of Luc's conversations with Mike, particularly the more-recent stuff, they might take on a different tone...

TMarkos

It was something of an impossibility for him to get Leire's soul, because as several people pointed out it would have forced the narrative to contort itself unacceptably in order to progress. Although - it would have been really funny if I made him sit in a room and told the majority of the remaining plot via correspondence with the other characters we've met thus far.

Alexandria Clarke

What the fuck T

I knew something was going to go wrong with Michael getting Leire's soul, but I was not expecting this! Another painful week of waiting begins.

TMarkos

This is another one of those where I miss having my glasses-push emote. It's been a long time coming, and I'm really glad we've reached this point in the story. Exciting times coming up!
