I'd say it's thunderdome, but that was clearly what happened when he fought Friedrich.

I'm already much better, thank you! It's an interesting turn for Mike because this is the first time we've seen him choose to fight a battle instead of being forced into it by circumstance. We'll have to see how it pans out...

Mike's conversations are usually conversations that he feels like he needs to have. The conversation in this case was not just about identity, but the fluidity of identity and how that enhances it rather than compromises its integrity. In a lot of ways it's a rephrase of one of my favorite Leire epigraphs from chapter fifteen: "[...] Consciousness is not a sculpture or a painting, where external modifications to the base material corrupt the original intent of the creator. Thinking of oneself as a static work of one’s own will is a natural consequence of the limited and intimate perspective we enjoy into our own psyche. Instead I posit that consciousness is an emergent phenomenon and that the self is much more quicksilver than iron. We are an illusory whole born of many inseparable influences. This is also a poorly-received idea in most cases. I do not see why; I have always found the notion liberating. I am not cold stone nor wrought metal. I am the breath of wind and the ripple of water, the fire dancing upward from the kindling of my flesh. How could I resent my soul for further stoking such a flame?"

I'm already much improved, I think writing the chapter served to extract the evil from me and put it onto the page. We'll have to see how this confrontation with Galen resolves...

Doctor Zero

It's on now!

Get well soon. An excellent chapter. But, mostly a turn without seeing the results of that turn. It'll be exciting to see the pay off in either direction, next time. I do wonder if Michael will lose, but in a way that shakes Galen and his ability to lead this battle, at some cost to Michael. Michael is not invincible (unless he kills Galen now that Galen obviously has quite some affinity for him). I think that in this chapter we can really see some aspects of what the Safid say about the gardener. He's doing his best. He's all heart (ignore Spark). The others may have big souls, but his is the most human.

Part of me is hoping that his conversation with "Jeorg" will tie in somehow. Usually Michael's improvements in using his soul have followed increased understanding of some deeper mechanism. Not-Jeorgs prompting about the continuity of a person's identity, independent of their ensoulment, would be well timed to serve as such. Here's hoping he'll find a way to refuse, destroy, or perhaps nonviolently steal Galen's soul. I wouldn't mind just a cool fight though - still lots of untapped soul-synergy for Michael, after all

Hopefully you get better soon! Another excellent chapter. But Is this how he gets a potens soul?
