I certainly agree with M. Ashby-Saracen that the Dwarf Manatee is speciating. It's clear that phenotypic evidence tends to preceed concrete genetic evidence (see Verne Grant, 1985).

Fascinating - thank you! I think the criteria for declaring what is or is not a species are far too narrow. It could be that the dwarf manatee is a species in the process of evolving and that given time, the genetics would "catch up" with the anatomical differences. Sadly, it looks as though scientific reluctance to give it such a chance might be one of the factors that leads to its disappearance.
