New Species Discovered Washed Up on Beaches

A few YouTube commenters have been asking for more marine content, and Niko (one of the Patrons here) brought my attention to his interest in the recent finding of the Spade-Toothed Whale carcass in New Zealand, a species that has never been filmed alive.

It's a great pity that these attempts to give species recognition to orca populations are on hold as this could afford them greater protection. On the theme of marine related contents: I've just seen the very sad news that a sperm whale named Julio has been killed in a collision with a ship in the Straights of Gibraltar - there have been a number of recent sperm whale deaths due to ship strikes in the Mediterranean and calls to have cetacean spotters on ships in the area to avoid such tragedies are not being acted on. I wonder if you could produce something about the threats to cetaceans around the world? The other subject which could make for a fascinating video is the research that suggests that sperm whales have an incredibly complex communication - they do after all have by far the largest brains of any animal including us (five times the size of a human brain). There are anecdotal stories from the 19th century that sperm whales were actually telling each other to avoid whaling ships and there must be a lot more inmformation out there.

There absolutely have been! But how to define a species is a hotly debated topic, so all attempts to do so have been stopped.
