This is very under-baked, but when y’all started talking about the germ of optimism in Marx for joint-stock firms, the only real thing that I could think of presently is the ESG movement in shareholder economics. It’s been a real rupture, with backlash too, from the overwhelming trend of shortsightedness that makes even private firms look sagely long-term in their business strategy. Idk, it seems like this is a topic that could pair well into the Year Zero series, Tarence and the Tardy Boys will not shut up about that book Discounting the Future, and I think now would be a good time as ever to pair up these discussions.

Thank you for this. I feel like demographic change is the big elephant in the increasingly warm room. There are places with looming population drop offs (US, China, Europe) and there are places where people will have to continue leaving because of changing climate conditions. I think the socialist solution is obviously to help make space for people in the most habitable places but internationalism might seem counterintuitive when the pie seems to be getting smaller.
