Towards the end of my career I began to hear that SDB were not as secure as I had been led to be believe. Due to the economy, starting in 2008 up until the time I got out preparedness folks began to talk about bank runs and closures and that technically you would not have access to your box during a closure. Also from the above 2 links, they give some interesting perspective especially change of ownership in a bank and theft is not covered. Since cash is not insurable by homeowners insurance (to my knowledge), and the bank will not be responsible that would be a risky venture. Anyway, Clark Howard in the above article says he keeps his in a personal safe. Just some thoughts.
