Scholarship Mentoring Update (New tier split)
🕑 Added 2025-08-09 10:04:42 +0000 UTCHi folks, thank you so much for the positive feedback on the new Scholarship Mentoring tier - 4 people have signed up already, and I'm extremely pleased with how it's going! (you may read my original announcement here)
After more thought, I have done what a few people suggested, and split the tier in two. The two new tiers are: Mentoring (Scholarship) and Mentoring (Diversity). In short, the first is for people (like students) with financial restrictions, the second is to save space for people (like women) who are under-represented in tech.
Mentoring (Scholarship) is open to:
Students (16yo and over)
People on a fixed income (pension, disability benefits, etc)
Or financially disadvantaged in other ways I've not thought of (email me to discuss)
Mentoring (Diversity) is open to:
Women, trans, non-binary & other marginalised genders
People marginalised by their race
Or under-represented in tech in other ways I've not thought of (again, email me if unsure)
I found mixing these two groups into one tier unsatisfactory, I believe this is now better, and more clearly saves space for those I'm trying to help.
Of course, (just as in political parties) 2 is only slightly better than 1, ideally I'd be able to use some more granular system than Patreon gives us, but nonetheless I am much happier with this now.

I’m on the opposite end of the demographic chart you are looking for. I’d be opened to helping offset their cost in-exchange for pre-recorded lessons?

I just had a question asking if neurodivergent people qualify for the Equality Tier, here are my current thoughts: Neurodivergent is more tricky, as, if anything, we're OVERrepresented in STEM fields! (You may know the joke, "Autism causes vaccines!"). Perhaps my rule there would be if someone feels deeply disadvantaged or disabled compared to their peers, and it affects their income and life dramatically? It's a challenge to balance including everyone who would LIKE my help, with holding space for everyone who NEEDS my help.
