Rust is the New C (draft video for comment)
🕑 Added 2025-03-09 21:19:23 +0000 UTCHi folks, I've got a VERY early video draft for you, and I wonder what you think of this new slide format.
While the script and audio of the video is the same as my usual, I'm trying out a new markdown presentation framework called Presenterm.
This is a VERY rough cut, the fonts are inconsistent and there's a bunch of polish I'd like to give, but there's more than enough here for you to judge, I think.
I wonder if, especially for coding videos like this one, this terminal-based framework might be a better fit.
I'm on the fence about this, what do you think?

And man I wish I didn't have to learn JavaScript...I think I've touched like 7 languages before getting to Rust and now it feels like "it's too late" to learn it. It feels like an up heal battle and it's hard to stick with it. Feels a lot like meditating 10 minutes a day lol

I didn’t read the description before watching the video and was wondering why there were so many blockquotes! And there are tables now! Some minor polish around spacing and contrasting colors like Coca mentioned on the discord is all that is needed, I think. Also, I’m a little worried about the pitchfork-carrying crowd when this goes public, but it needs to be said. - Ranti(nghuman)

Colors, font and overall form is clean and pleasing, but the amount of written text and information (tables, quotes etc...) made it a little hard to focus on both what's on the screen and what's being said, leaving me a little confused at times. (But that might just be me trying to read code I do not have any knowledge in) I really enjoyed the Fortran bit, well executed and quite funny as it appropriately break the usual vibe of your videos imo. Thanks for the new video :)

the Fortran bit where you yell at the mic from far away is a funny bit but a minor departure from your usual aesthetic. I think its fun.

I prefer the old aesthetic. Clean - Concise - Different. It stands out in the sea of algorithm driven thumbnails and titles. More importantly -it's you- it's your brand. Embrace it, don't change it. You do you. On a side note: You brought back memories. My first computer was an IMSAI 8080 and then a Kaypro IV. I'm more of a hardware geek but I still remember logging in to ARPANET to run packet tests.

Probably one of C's biggest problems is that it tries to simultaneously be a high-level and a low-level language, but was not actually designed to be good at either of those. It fails at being a good high-level language due to programs not being easily portable without significant effort of the programmer, and fails at being a good low-level language due to pervasive undefined behaviour.

Brilliant and informative as always 🦀 Some points for consideration: 1:53 Is the ‘V’ in ‘C++V’ intentional or a typo? 2:45 Both quotation marks are opening ones (“); perhaps use “…” instead. In addition, consider outdenting the first line by one character, so so the text itself is horizontally aligned but the opening quotation mark hangs in a way that signals a block quote. 7:48 The code has ‘defualt’ in line #8. I don’t know FORTRAN but I assume this is a typo. 8:34 You say ‘[…] with this single command’. What single command?

That's my career - I am a Grace. Basic, Fortran, PL11, lisp, algol68 K&R C on vax, pdp11, two decades of OS and filesystem work. But it was quickly obvious after some of what we loved about C was inherently toxic/ dangerous. Evolving in parallel with open source ethos also incredibly important. Now rust is giving me the kind of tingle I got from k&r in 79.
