Project Binky - Episode 39
🕑 Added 2024-10-25 12:09:45 +0000 UTCWell folks, here it is: Episode 39.
Those of you who watched the draft last week will hopefully notice the changes and indeed we took on board your feedback and made some amendments.
We hope you enjoy it - it's been far too long in coming and we really appreciate those of you who stuck with us, and of course you new guys who have just recently joined.
The second part of the dash odyssey will follow in a few weeks as the bulk of the work was happening concurrently with the work in this video. We haven't started filming the links yet, but we'll start that on Monday.
In the meantime, the next video you'll get is the accompanying Howie Did It which we editing right now.
Thanks once again, we literally couldn't have done it without you.
Cheers!
Nik and Richard.

Guys, I used to work in Avionics and I wouldn't have attempted that - well done! That said re-inventing wheels does seem to be a recurring theme with Binky. Your mad, and I love it.
Adam Stadnick
Outstanding. I've gone through a whole adjustment on the solder printing idea, from "what an absurd, overcomplicated solution" to "I guess it has merit" to "this is brilliant and possibly the ONLY way to accomplish what they were after". Onwards!
Frans Wilbrink
Ah, matt parker often refers to future Matt in his videos too.. but maybe he got it of superfastmatt.. not watched the latter...
Vincent King
I think a superfastmatt reference
John Duuring
Just watched again and got the smoke joke. Obvious now, but how did you get it all back in? Answer in episode 40?
Simon Ludborzs
The tribute to Clarkson, May and Hammond, perfect.
David Yates
Talk about going the long way around whilst doing it the hard way! Utterly ridiculous and unnecessary but congratulations on making it this far!
Geoff Thornburrow
Good to know it's just a prototype and you'll get a proper board printed where you don't have to turn down rivets in the lathe to make vias :D
Bad Obsession Motorsport
We thought you lot might be interested in the process. Thank you.
Simon Ludborzs
Not going to lie. Watched the draft cut, thought ' there's not much more they can do to that' and I am amazed at how much better the final cut is. Bravo you magnificent idiots, Bravo!
Tommy McLean
Congratulations gentlemen. Mastering the electronics and actually assembling it on your own speaks volumes. Simply marvelous! I take my hat off at your vision, endurance, quality and execution. Glad to still be one of your long-time Patrons.
Louis
Well done lads on getting back in front of the camera can’t have been easy after all that, that was some amount of fried components, heads must have been there too. 👍
Jitesh Mistry
Good spot that man, had missed it myself!
DevoPants
Heckin’ heck. I would have mentioned it probably best to talk to AaronCake about custom dash PCB business, but you’re already 14 years deep into it, probably best to stick to what you have going on.
Bad Obsession Motorsport
Correct
Ville Huovinen
I think it's @SuperfastMatt reference. :)
Brian R. Claveau
You truly define the meaning of bespoke ! Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to the next installment. Endless respect for your pursuit of perfection.
Frans Wilbrink
thank goodness for Patreon nerds spotting things like that ;)
John Robertson
Holy moly, what a ride! This video was priceless - I knew this when I saw Nick take an angle grinder to a circuit board, fully expecting it to remain functional :O I have tremendous respect for BOM inventing a novel approach to breadboarding to avoid a rat's nest of wires. I'm sure working with Nick is incredibly frustrating, However, it is becoming apparent that Binky is his opus, and the series of videos documenting the project are both informative and inspiring, and are available to anyone with an internet connection. Thanks BOM for all the hard work which has gone into this incredible project!
Bad Obsession Motorsport
You're right - I changed it this morning but no idea why it's missing! FUUUUUU@@@***
John Duuring
Absolutely amazing and no different than watching y’all make and remake the chassis to your personal spec and standards. Now, how about an Escargot update?
Chuckdensmore
An hour long binky episode?! Woo hoo!
Huw Davies
Day off today, so stuck it on the telly, feet up with a brew as soon as it landed. Keep going, the end is in sight, until Nik sees something he wants to improve on.
Oscar Zettervall
Thank you guys for not giving up <3
Frans Wilbrink
@13:37 is that a Matt Parker (standupmaths) reference?
Mark Kane
Can't believe I even counted the pages of Patrons!! Great vid as always :)
Money Grip
IM SO EXCITED
Frans Wilbrink
@7:32 a bit of audio seems to be missing...

The box full of used traces at the end reminds me of the 3D printing learning curve. Had several bins full of discarded first layers! Ahhh The memories!!! Great to see the Beginning of the End is neigh!!
Chris Egan
I think I've come around finally. I was really off-put that you'd taken this approach initially, because you're finally in a realm that I know really well, and making real boards is so easy for me, so why bother making a solder printer when you can order boards. But it's easy to forget that I was once at the same place and staring down electronics and programming is beyond intimidating. If anything watching this has reminded me just how much I've learned in this space. More than once watching this episode brought back a memory of how exciting it was to learn about something like arduinos and figure out how to use them. All that to say, I'm super excited to watch you learn and succeed. Welcome to the electronics DIY club.
Frans Wilbrink
I think I spotted a FB postbtoo but cant find it anymore, so guess automaautomatic process?

Never clicked something so fast in my life. YES!
Bad Obsession Motorsport
It's unlisted on YouTube as normal for this time, but adding it to playlists does indeed make it viewable (stupid YouTube ting). I've remedied the situation. Thank you.
CoopDogg1983
Guys the video is public on YouTube, it’s also viewable publicly on the playlist too.
