I used to have a subaru that kept shoeing the fuel level after the ignition was switched off. I always found that a handy feature as you could always easily see the fuel level even without the keys. So you could keep that since you can program the arduino any way you want :) not a big thing but worth considering.. great rough cut :) amazing overenginering as always.. did not expect you could extenextend that to the electronics but you did and thank goodness for that!

I'm not a EE, and I can guarantee those solder traces will fail. The E39 BMW 5-series has similar solder traces in its DSC module, and they fail pretty dang often. A quick google for "E39 trifecta" will yield the symptoms.

... So that's three of the six dials dialed in. Now on to the 3x 52mm jobbies. These will need wiring from the main cluster to adjust the brightness of the freshly installed (how will that be done?) dimmable LEDs. Oh! Arduino controlled brightness means the entire dash lighting could be configured as a Shift Light! Especially considering that thing about the gauge lighting we're not allowed to talk about. Thank me later. :-)

Did Nik say “7 year older Celica?” Is that right? It didn’t make sense to me. There’s been more and better explanation here in prose of the reasons for a full dash replacement. At the end of the litany of problems segment, you explain “The lights are too dim and the boost gauge doesn’t match” and LED’s don’t help. You then make a leap to “we’re going to start from scratch” which I don’t think was adequately explained. Suggestion: show the stock dash, alone, explain why it’s no longer useable. Show the aftermarket dash it in the car at the appearance 2 years ago. State that Nik thought it was the answer then explain why it doesn’t match the standard of the rest of the car. At that point, pause, maybe a spongebob “two years later” meme, and point out that if the solution were a bracket and some lathe work it would have been five minutes of funk, but the monkeys had to iteratively prototype with an entirely new set of skills as long as it took. The rest is skookum. Loved it!

As an EE, I'm rendered moderately speechless, but I can't argue that you didn't get a working prototype out of it. That said, having designed boards for automotive aftermarket products, PLEASE convert that to a real PCB at some point. Those solder tracks, even in epoxy, won't survive rally. Nice work though. Seriously.

Looking forward to the inevitable troubleshooting an intermediate fault, that’s actually due to one of those printed tracks fatiguing and breaking. CNC PCB prototyping was created exactly for this purpose. This is going to have all the disadvantages of point to point wiring without any of the advantages.

Printed solder? Well I've never heard of that before! Just as long as you can make sure it all stays stuck on the board! This episode is almost as fascinating as the one where Nik managed to alter the clutch pedal action (I still cant quite get how that works btw). I'm somewhat into electronics and arduino stuff and certainly appreciate the learning curve. This has to be so near production quality as to make a mockery of average home built car electronics I'm sure you've thought of his but I bet subscribers would like also understand the full trials and tribulations of how long it took to get you here

You magnificent insane idiots, I almost had an emotion when the 2001 music kicked in. As an Electronics Engineer, let me introduce you guys to bodge wires: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupportgore/comments/pjjcwy/is_this_how_you_install_a_processor/#lightbox Yes you can rework a Professional PCB :) The fact you printed and transferred traces to rework the servo motors, wow! Your 7805 regs might run a little toasty - at 250mA they are dropping over2 watts of heat (13.8 - 5 = 8.8V across the regulator, * 250mA = 2.2W) and might cause issues (long term heating of the PCB and lots of thermal cycles could cause those solder traces to fail). You can get switching regulators in the same package / form factor that will run much much cooler. Lastly, please consider getting a professional PCB made for installing into Binky - even when encapsulated in expoxy I would not trust those solder traces for a long life. All hail Binky.

As an electrical engineer, some of this episode pained me to watch, especially the angle grinder to the PCB. The result is great though. I might suggest applying some cover film to keep it all together and free from dusty circuit shorts over time. As much as I would have loved to help with PCB design and possibly get the car on the road quicker, I think we all know what we signed up for here from the title of the channel and the dedication to doing it your way is commendable. Keep up the effort and thanks for taking us all along for the ride.

Nic and Richard, I've watched through the rough cut (excellent indeed it is!) and am glad you've made the idiot light colours symmetrical. I do have a concern with the replacement of bi-metal strip gauges. Bi-metal is quite slow in responding to current changes. This behavior acts as an averager over a few seconds and becomes most important in a fuel gauge where the float bobs up and down as the fuel sloshes around even in a baffled tank. In the demo of the servo control from the pot there seemed to be an almost instant response to input. Watching the needle flutter up and down will be annoying in itself, but even more so will be the incessant flashing of the low fuel LED when approaching and after the low fuel condition. I can only trust you've implemented some kind of smoothing/averaging to steady the PWM output to the servo and that the LED is controlled by said smoothed PWM output value rather than the float input value.

i can see you guys having lifespan issues with the LED's and voltage regulators you have chosen, ideally they need some form of heatsink (as some one who works with a lot of SMT LEDs i've done more then my fair share of replacement of heat failed LEDs)

Just finished, as someone who tried to replace a few surface mount push switches on a board for a mixer in work (I sent it out in the end) I salute you 🫡. Looks like I need an even smaller soldering iron and 10x the patients… Still concerned about the longevity of the solder traces, would it be worth adding a support over them electrical varnish? Or glassing a mat over them?

Can't help but think that having 5 or 6 or 10 iterations of conventionally fabricated PCBs run off would have been cheaper and faster, but hey, somebody's gotta do the mad science. Then again, I'm coming at it from the angle where I know how to bodge a PCB I screwed up the design of, and already mostly know what not to do.

Took me back to first day in electrical engineering at uni. Well the soldering tails onto circuit boards anyway. Good to see the rough cut. You might need to explain why the sockets were soldered then cut off the speedo and rev counter. Otherwise all makes sense to me.

I see why you've got a section repeated as it works in both slots, I'd probably go chronologically and I think the second place works for it. I have to say after my own years of designing, making then finally farming out my PCBs, you have provided a whole new dimension to that for me (and given me some ideas😉)! I’m glad you are going to encase the final product in an epoxy coating, that’s essential. I did my share of adapting new to old with my recent completion of a restoration of a ‘57 MGA with a ‘99 Miata/MX-5 drivetrain, ECU and instruments, then blending it with the late fifties era stock wiring harness; I can definitely appreciate what you’ve been through. But my customizing and integration of the MX-5 instruments into the Smiths gauges is child’s play compared to your efforts here…beautiful! Cheers, Eric

I must admit when I heard everything about the delays due to making the PCB I wondered why you didn’t just get someone like pcbway to make it for you, but having watched this I totally get it now. The ability to modify the traces without trashing the entire board is brilliant It would be good to get some detail about the modifications you made to that timer circuit (even if you ended up not using it) but other than that great stuff, looking forward to the final edit Also, what does PTC stand for?

To answer the big question, yes it makes sense. I loved it. My notes: The rivet joke is pure class. Count von Count doesn't laugh until he has counted the finial item being counted and then there is lightening. Can you add a thunder clap in post? Filing marks are shown before they are explained. How many board revisions were there? The 'Dawn of man' backing music was awesome but it needs a little more build up before you drop that epic on us. That finial dial sweep on start up was beautiful and deserves highlighting.
