You have to always go with Contrast... The background is dark you need light text

I agree that the contrast is better with the top image. I would also say that there needs to be some transition from the edges of the text to the background, not a drop shadow, but maybe a 'negative glow', a soft glow around the outside using black or the darkest red in the background as the glow color, with the blending mode set to 'normal' or 'multipy'. Play with the distance and the falloff of the glow until it feels right.
