Echoes of the First Eldritch Crusade

The regiment—what remained of it—lay scattered like offal in a butcher’s yard. Torn torsos leaked their contents into the mud, severed heads stared blankly at the sky, mouths frozen in silent screams. A soldier’s ribcage jutted upward, cracked open like a grotesque flower, its lungs still quivering in the chill air. Blood ran in rivulets, thick and black, pooling around the hunter’s boots as he staggered forward. His left arm dangled by threads of sinew, the bone splintered and glistening with marrow. His chest was a gaping maw of flesh where shrapnel had torn through, and each ragged breath sprayed crimson mist from his lips. His right eye wept blood, the socket a pulpy void.
Yet the hunter’s soul burned with the Radiant One’s light, an inferno of devotion that eclipsed his mortal agony. “The Radiant One wills it!” he roared, voice cracking with ecstatic fervor. “Through blood and ruin, I am His blade, His scourge, His holy fire!”
Before him towered the beast, a grotesque blasphemy against the divine. Its hide was a nightmare of shifting flesh—gaping wounds from sword and spear oozed black ichor, only to close in seconds, the skin writhing as it mended. Severed tentacles sprouted anew, coiling and thrashing, their tips glistening with fresh poison while its countless eyes pulsed with a sickly glow, mocking the purity of the Radiant One’s radiance. Its maw gaped, a chasm lined with jagged teeth, each dripping with gore and the shredded remnants of the faithful. The air reeked of rot and sulfur, a stench that clawed at the hunter’s throat.
“Abomination!” he shrieked, spittle and blood flying from his lips. “Your filth stains the Radiant One’s creation! I will rend you asunder, and your screams shall be my prayer!”
With a cry of righteous fury, he hefted his spear—its shaft slick with his own blood—and hurled it with all his remaining might. The weapon sank deep into the beast’s flank, piercing a bulbous sac that erupted in a geyser of yellow bile and wriggling maggots. The creature howled, a sound that split the earth, and collapsed to the ground, tripping over its own pus, its tentacles thrashing in agony.
The hunter seized these crucial seconds. He pried the Radiant Reaper from the cold dead hands of his captain, arming the sacred instrument of annihilation. Its frame gleamed with runes that pulsed like veins, and its cables dangled, alive with a faint, ethereal hum. Trembling with reverence and pain, he gripped the cables, their tips sharp as serpents’ fangs, and drove them into his chest. They punched through flesh, cracking ribs aside, and burrowed into his still-beating heart. Blood sprayed as the cables fused with his arteries, merging his lifeblood with the weapon’s divine mechanism.
The surge of radiance was immediate and apocalyptic. Radiance flooded his body, an unstoppable tide of holy fire that overwhelmed his mortal frame. His veins swelled, glowing with incandescent light that engulfed them, pulsing beneath his skin until it cracked and split in jagged fissures. His flesh burst at the seams, unable to contain the divine power surging within; light leaked from every tear, searing the air with a sizzle as his body began to unravel. Each heartbeat was a thunderclap of agony, his bones splintering under the strain, his muscles tearing as the radiance sought to escape its fragile prison. His screams twisted into a hymn of anguished exultation:
“Radiant One, consume me!” he wailed, tears of blood and holy light streaming from his remaining eye. “My flesh, my soul—all is Yours! Let me be Your wrath!”
The beast recovered and surged forward, its tentacles snapping toward him, but the hunter was beyond surrender. Driven by divine madness, he staggered forward, boots sinking into the mire of gore. His body was failing—legs buckling as radiance poured from his cracked skin, arms trembling as his veins burned—but his will held firm. As the beast’s jaws crashed down, a maw of splintered teeth wide enough to swallow him whole, the hunter moved. He lurched aside, a tentacle slamming into the mud where he’d stood, spraying gore. His knees gave out, and he fell—but it was no surrender. Sliding through the blood-soaked mire, he twisted beneath the beast’s bulk, the Radiant Reaper gripped in his remaining hand, and rammed the cannon’s barrel into the soft flesh under the beast’s jaw. “Try to regenerate from this.”
He squeezed the trigger.
The Reaper unleashed its fury. A torrent of searing light erupted from the barrel, fueled by the hunter’s final, faltering heartbeats. The beam ripped through the creature’s throat, vaporizing flesh and bone in an instant. Its eyes burst, spraying viscous fluid; its tentacles flailed, then curled inward as the light devoured it from within. Skin sloughed off in steaming sheets, organs ruptured like festering fruit, and the beast’s roars dissolved into a gurgling wail. The radiance surged outward, a purifying cataclysm that scoured the battlefield—bones crumbled to dust, blood boiled away, and the earth itself blackened under the divine onslaught.
The hunter’s body succumbed to the blaze. His heart, pierced by the cables, exploded in a shower of light and gore; his flesh melted, dripping like wax as the radiance consumed him entirely. With his last breath, he whimpered softly, “Radiant One… Take me into Your embrace…”

It's enough to make a grown man cry. DAMN that shit was good. It makes me consider, do we have an origin for the Eldritch scourge upon the city? Or rather, is it just the city, or is the world just as threaten, just far more unprotected.
