I believe that Itachi's motivation must be because of his traumas when he fought in the war / lost his best friend. Besides, he was also constantly brainwashed by Konoha's elders. Furthermore, he wants the clan and the village to be able to coexist peacefully without a fight between the two.

That decision of Itachi to kill all his family members is one of the most retarded things in Naruto story and the reasons behind are also weak. Still I don't see the reason to kill Itachi in this story when Kaito wants to stay in the Konoha without planning coup d'etat that is the thing that Itachi always wanted is it not ?
