Odin is the god of war because he spoke so eloquently and avoided battle at all cost. His words were precise and deliberate. I see the bending of swords as a symbol in ritual to do the same thing. Avoid war.

I just recently did a deep dive into my Ancestry via Gedmatch. My DNA is shown to be closest to the people that were the ancestors of these Nordic bronze age peoples (Norther battle axe culture and the Corded ware peoples. Not that it makes me special in any way but its a fascinating thing to witness their history and the fact that we can even study it today is captivating.
