But it is clear that his interests no longer align with what we people of the New Republic need today! And that statement goes for many others I can name here as well.” He looked straight at Leia with an unwavering glare. “Heroes are heroes and we should be grateful to their efforts. But perhaps they should also learn their place. The Galactic Empire was a terrible thing and without the valiant deeds of some of the people here present with me, we would still be suffering under the yolk of their oppression.” He cleared his throat. “But it has also been broken. Let us honor those who have done us such a great service and delivered us into an era free of Palpatine’s tyranny. But we should not live in the shadow of heroes either. We must forge ahead on our own path for our own best interests. Lest our new order be stillborn before it has the chance to grow strong.”
The senate was hushed. Him looking squarely at her was no mere coincidence, and she and the rest of the senate knew it. But Leia was undaunted.
“You speak as if we are living in an age of peace Senator Fey’yla,” she said. “Palpatine is dead and we no longer feel Vader’s breath down our necks. But the empire is far from finished. Our worlds are under siege from the Imperial Remnant’s forces day after day. The armada was dealt a heavy blow the night I bore witness to the second Death Star blowing up in the skies of Endor. And they are only the beginning of what we have to deal with. I personally put an end to Jabba the Hutt, a gangster who only ever looked out for his own interests. He was the most vicious of his clan. But I think we all know,” she said, looking at the rest of her fellow senators, “that he was not unique in his cruelty. When the Hutt clans are not fighting with each other for who will take his place, they have proven to be a scourge perhaps worse than the remnant. At least we know with imperial forces that our worlds are under attack. Jabba’s successors and the cartels? They sneak amongst our people as if they were our own while plying their trade and trafficking their services to so many wicked ends. They are the unseen enemy, a sickness whose bloat ruins us even as we speak. I am sure that there are many here who are on their payroll.”
“Do you mean to suggest I am corrupt, Senator Organa?” Fey’yla said. He had not looked away from her once during her speech.
“You once spoke of how the New Republic must move on away from the efforts of us heroes,” she said. “As we now struggle thanks to our efforts. My real mother who conceived and I never knew and my father who raised me as if I were his own were present when Palpatine made the inauguration speech at his new empire, speaking of the problems of the current republic of their time and how they intended to move away from that. And the old republic might have had it’s problems, but it was still a republic. If his dark spirit is watching us from whatever netherworld he was sent to, then I think he would be proud.”
The Bothan’s face twisted into an animalistic state of rage. Contra to their bestial features, their kind was far from stupid. “Come now,” she said, hoping to break the tension. “There is no use in pointing fingers. We must all work together for the sake of a unified galaxy.”
Leia briefly glanced at her then right back at Fey’yla. Mon Mothma was more of a politician and a strategist during the Rebel Alliance, and here in the political realm that was all too true. She and Leia had worked hard to topple the empire. But even then they both knew they were total opposites. The other woman played the maid of civility well, but the Bothan senator was one of her most trusted advisors. She had her own agenda in mind.
No doubt in that moment she only sought to help Fey’yla not say something stupid in the heat of the moment and save face.
Leia would not dignify her with a response. Instead she spoke to Fey’yla once more. “That remark was too harsh.” She bowed in apology. “Senator Fey’yla. The Rebel Alliance could have never succeeded without the help of the Bothan spy network. But that does not mean the New Republic should be shackled to Bothan interests. There has been many a time where you have suggested that your people have been ignored and mistreated. But you said earlier that we should not live in the shadow of heroes. The Bothan spies were heroes too. And we should not live in their shadows either.”
He seemed to calm down. Then he grunted. “I pray that you are right, Senator Organa. The galaxy has proven to be a dangerous place. When it comes to what is right, I hope that we are able to do the right thing. Or else we may all find ourselves creating a new order not unlike the one that came before. You speak of Palpatine?” He snickered. “Then I will say this much. The apple and the tree. Do you take my meaning?”
“Yes, I do. But Vader was blood alone and I only learned of that when he died.”
“I meant more to suggest the political lineage of which you came from. The Imperial Senate was never a true senate, and that shriveled old man from Naboo could never have accomplished what he did on his own. You were never an active part in his schemes and used your position to subvert many of his goals. Standing before me now, you no doubt have much to be proud of. And yet to me in a real senate, you seem green in so many ways.”
It was a stalemate. But it wasn't a victory. Leia had been used to stalemates during her time in the imperial senate. Whether it was dealing with other senators that blatantly supported the old empire's agenda, or the moffs themselves, she knew a stalemate didn't mean anything. The crowd was silent, and that could mean anything. And much was said between them that was true, and yet he did in the end have his own goals at the forefront. The Bothan senator had so many times argued for his peoples’ interests at the expense of not only humans but also the various other species of the galaxy. In the new order, it would do them no good to be tearing each other apart in such a fashion.
As Leia’s mind returned to the present, the current peace was not such a small thing that it was shattered by such memories.
