It's A Dry Heat
🕑 Added 2016-10-02 04:39:33 +0000 UTC Not that long ago, in a galaxy conveniently close by...These two panels of pointlessly witty banter are brought to you by my weekend hobby project. Say hello to Starship Awesome.
It's not entirely finished yet. I still need to detail the underside, and the interior is an empty gray box right now. But I plan on doing more work on it here and there, in the coming months.
And just to give you an idea of what a maniac I truly am....
Back in the days before CGI, when someplace like Industrial Light And Magic wanted to build a spaceship, they'd buy a big pile of model kits, pick out loads of little pieces from those models, and glue them all over the outside. This was known as GREEBLE.
So, that's what I did - there are a few "kitbash" pieces, but almost all the little details on this are actual model parts, from actual model kits. But, not just any model kits - ILM tends to use a stock selection of kits, and so the pieces from those kits tend to show up on every model they make. I researched which kits they use, and used the same parts. (Including the infamous Leopold Railway Cannon, which supplied several of the "Universal Greeble" that Adam Savage once raved about having to have on every spaceship model someplace.) As such, the bits on this are some of the same bits you'll find glued to the outside of the original Battlestar Galactica, The Millennium Falcon, and Darth Vader's Imperial Shuttle (to name a few) There are tank pieces, train pieces, even a few car parts.
But wait, there's more... thanks to a website called britmodeller.com, which not only shows you the sprue trees for various models, but all scanned in to the same exact scale, I was able to size everything together.... meaning, that this ship is something that could realistically be built with these pieces.
And as a final testimony to my imbalance, the top panel was shot with a lens aperture of 40 mm (which is pretty much the industry standard for film-making), while the bottom panel was shot with a lens aperture of 28mm, which is known in the film industry as "the Spielberg Lens."
As I said, it's not done yet, but it's done enough to show it off a bit.
Enjoy.

Just now googled it. Wow, that is amazingly close - wonder if they saw some of my old Ray Dream Designer pix of him from way back. I posted a bunch of them to AOL back in the day.

Anki now sells a little toy tank-treaded robot with a blue-LCD-screen face, which immediately reminded me of this. (theirs has arms, though. And is WAY smaller.)

He's lucky there's any breathable atmoshpere. And we already knew what a maniac you truly were. ^_^
