Chapter 1: The Worst First Day of His New Life
Joy was an explosion in Naruto Uzumaki's chest. He clutched the polished metal plate against his forehead; the Leaf symbol engraved on it felt more real and heavy than anything he had ever touched in his life.
"I did it!" he yelled at the sky, his voice echoing through the streets as he leaped from rooftop to rooftop with endless energy. "I'm a ninja! Believe it! Look at me now, you jerks! Naruto Uzumaki is on his way to becoming Hokage!"
He landed nimbly on a telephone pole and crouched, an orange blur against the sky, watching the bustle of the village below him. People pointed at him from the streets. He recognized a couple of shopkeepers who always gave him suspicious looks; today, one of them shook his head, but the other had a small smile on his face. A group of kids waved at him. He waved back with a grin that split his face. The usual disdain didn't matter today. Today, the band on his forehead was a shield. It was proof. He belonged here.
"First step is a celebration," he told himself, rubbing the belly that was already starting to rumble. "A special bowl of ramen at Ichiraku! No, ten! Ten bowls to celebrate my first day as a real shinobi!"
With a cry of pure euphoria, he leaped from the pole, an orange and blue streak heading for his favorite place in the world. The day was perfect. The sky was blue. And for the first time in his life, he felt that the future was a bright, blank page, waiting for him to write his own legend.
The aroma of pork broth and fresh noodles hit him before he even pushed aside the curtain at the entrance.
"Old man Teuchi! Ayame! Welcome Konoha's most incredible ninja!" Naruto exclaimed, bursting into the small stall.
Teuchi, the owner of the ramen stand, looked up from the steaming pot, the wrinkles around his eyes deepening as he smiled. "Well, well. If it isn't our number one customer. What's all the commotion, Naruto?"
"The commotion is this!" Naruto leaned over the counter, proudly pointing to the ninja headband on his forehead. "I graduated! Finally! I'm a shinobi of the Leaf, believe it!"
Ayame, Teuchi's daughter, came out from the back, drying her hands on an apron. Her eyes went wide. "Naruto, that's amazing! Congratulations! I knew you could do it!"
"Of course you knew! I was destined for greatness!" he said, puffing out his chest. "And to celebrate, I want my usual order, but times ten!"
Teuchi let out a laugh. "Ten bowls of miso ramen with extra pork. An order worthy of a future Hokage. But can you pay for it? Missions haven't started yet, you know."
"Don't worry about that! My frog wallet is ready for action!" Naruto pulled out his green coin purse with a flourish. "Today, I eat like a king!"
"In that case, have a seat, have a seat," Ayame said, pouring him a glass of water. "Are you excited about your team? Do you know who your teammates will be?"
Naruto shrugged as he took a big gulp of water. "Not yet. They announce it tomorrow. I hope I don't get stuck with Sasuke. That guy's a jerk." He paused. "Although it would be great to show him who's the best. And I really hope I get Sakura on my team. That way I can impress her with my ninja skills and she'll ask me out!"
Ayame smiled at him tenderly. "Well, whoever it is, make sure you work well as a team. That's the most important thing for a shinobi."
"Yeah, yeah, teamwork," Naruto repeated, though his mind was already on the first bowl of ramen that Teuchi slid in front of him. "Thanks for the food!"
He dove into the bowl with a fervor that made the father and daughter laugh. For the next hour, Ichiraku's stand was his personal paradise. He talked nonstop between slurps of broth and bites of noodles, telling a very exaggerated version of how he defeated Mizuki-sensei. Teuchi and Ayame listened patiently, nodding and asking the right questions, making him feel like the hero he had always dreamed of being.
When he finished the seventh bowl, he finally leaned back, his stomach pleasantly full and his heart overflowing.
"That was delicious, as always," he said with a sigh of satisfaction.
"I'm glad you liked it, Naruto," Teuchi replied, wiping down the counter. "Take it as a graduation gift from us."
Naruto blinked, surprised. "Really? But I ordered ten... well, almost ten!"
"Seven is a new record for you," Ayame chimed in with a giggle. "Consider the other three a credit for your next visit. We're proud of you, Naruto."
A warmth that had nothing to do with the ramen spread through Naruto's chest. It was a strange, pleasant feeling. "Thanks," he mumbled, a little embarrassed by the sudden kindness. "Believe it."
He paid for his meal, despite their protests, and said goodbye with one last energetic wave. As he walked through the streets of Konoha, with the setting sun painting the sky orange and purple, the world felt perfect. For the first time, he wasn't just "Naruto, the orphan," or "Naruto, the troublemaker." He was Naruto Uzumaki, Genin of the Hidden Leaf Village. And everything was going to be okay.
That's when it happened.
A sharp pinprick was born in the center of his brain and exploded outward, a piercing agony that stole his breath and sent him to his knees in the middle of the street with a choked cry.
"Agh! What... what the hell?" he gasped, clutching his head with both hands. His knuckles turned white from the pressure.
The world faded away. The sound of a nearby vendor, the colors of the sunset, the feel of the stones beneath his knees... everything was replaced by absolute darkness and a deafening hum that vibrated in his bones. Panic seized him. Was this an attack? Was someone doing something to him?
And then, in the blackness of his mind, a light flickered.
He saw a silver haired man with his face covered, shaking two small bells. The image changed. A bridge shrouded in mist and a boy in a mask crying tears of blood. The images accelerated, a torrent of visual information crashing into his consciousness without context or explanation.
"What is this? Who is that?" he whispered into the nothingness of his mind.
Sasuke, fighting a man with skin as pale as a snake's! Sasuke's body was covered in black, twisting marks.
"Sasuke! What's wrong with him?"
Sakura, with short hair, crying in the rain, begging Sasuke not to leave!
"No... Where is he going? Don't leave her, you idiot!"
A sand monster with crazed eyes screaming its mother's name while crushing people!
An old man with white hair and strange red paint on his face laughing his head off on top of a giant toad!
He was seeing his entire life, and the lives of everyone he knew, flash before his eyes at a dizzying speed. They weren't his memories. They were cold, distant. He saw battles he hadn't fought, heard screams he hadn't uttered, felt a pain that wasn't his. Fear and confusion became a lump in his throat.
An orange haired man with strange piercings in his face floating over the village, reducing it to a crater!
"No! The village! Ichiraku's!"
Hinata... Hinata standing before that man, saying his name in a shaky but firm voice, before she was...!
"Stop!" Naruto screamed in the darkness of his mind, but the images didn't stop. They swirled faster and faster, a cacophony of screams, explosions, and cries. "Stop it! What kind of technique is this?! Stop it now!"
He tried to break free, but nothing happened. This didn't feel like an enemy's technique. There was no foreign chakra invading him.
The whirlwind of images and sounds reached a fever pitch and then, as suddenly as it began, it stopped.
Naruto found himself lying on the street, his face pressed against the cold stones. He was panting, his body shaking uncontrollably, and his orange clothes were soaked in a cold sweat. The headache was gone, but the echo of what he had seen remained, fragments of a terrible future burned into his mind. He felt dizzy, nauseous. He pushed himself up slowly, leaning on his hands.
"What... what was that?" he whispered to the empty street. "A dream? A hallucination?"
That's when a new sensation washed over him. An unnatural calm, an absolute silence that replaced the chaos. And in his vision, letters appeared, bright and blue, floating in the air right in front of his face.
[FALNA SYSTEM ACTIVATED]
Naruto blinked once, twice, three times. He rubbed his eyes hard with the back of his hand until he saw stars, but the letters were still there. They floated, ethereal and perfectly crisp.
[WELCOME, HOST]
"Hello?" he said aloud, his voice sounding hoarse. He looked around frantically. The street was deserted. "Who said that? Come on out! I'm gonna kick your butt, believe it!"
[COMMUNICATION IS INTERNAL. I AM AN INNATE ABILITY AWAKENED BY THE FLOOD OF INFORMATION]
Naruto jumped to his feet, stumbling a little. "Internal? What do you mean internal? You're in my head! Get out of my head!" he yelled, slapping the sides of his head with his palms. "There's no room for two in here!"
The blue letters blinked patiently before changing.
"Ability? Flood? Stop using weird words!" Naruto demanded. He thought he had definitely gone crazy. The ramen must have gone bad. Or maybe Mizuki had hit him harder than he thought.
The letters changed again, displaying a more detailed text.
[UNIQUE ABILITY: FALNA] [DESCRIPTION: GRANTS THE HOST THE POWER TO ACCELERATE GROWTH AND BESTOW SPECIAL ABILITIES UPON OTHERS THROUGH A BLOOD RITUAL]
Naruto read the words over and over, his lips moving as he did. "Accelerate growth? Give abilities?"
The idea shook him. If he could make people stronger...
"Can I use it on myself?" he asked urgently, the idea of becoming super strong in an instant, stronger than Sasuke, even stronger than the old man Hokage, filling his mind with glorious possibilities. "I could master a thousand jutsus in one day!"
[NEGATIVE. THE HOST IS THE SOURCE. CANNOT BE THE RECIPIENT]
Naruto's bubble of excitement burst. "What?! What a drag!" he complained, kicking a loose stone. "That's the stupidest power in the world! What good is it if I can't use it on myself? So, can I use it on anyone? On Sasuke? I'd give him an awesome power and then beat him to prove I'm better!"
[NEGATIVE. AN INNATE CONDITION HAS BEEN DETECTED IN THE HOST. APPLICATION OF FALNA IS RESTRICTED]
Naruto frowned. "Condition? Restricted? What does that mean?"
And then, a new line of text appeared, one that left him even more confused.
[CONDITION: THE RECIPIENT OF THE FALNA MUST BE FEMALE]
Naruto stared at the sentence, his brain trying to process it. He read the line once. Twice. A third time, very slowly.
"Huh?" he finally said, his voice barely a whisper.
Then, the realization hit him.
"WHAAAAAAT?! ONLY GIRLS?! WHY ONLY GIRLS?!" he screamed at the night sky, his voice filled with indignation. "That makes no sense! It's stupid, believe it! And it's... it's weird! It's a weird, stupid rule!"
There was no response from the system. Instead, a new image appeared in his mind, not a violent and chaotic vision like the others, but a kind of quiet, methodical visual tutorial. He saw a hand, his hand, cutting its thumb with a kunai. Blood welled up, a bright red drop. Then, he saw that same hand drawing a series of intricate symbols on the bare back of a female silhouette. He couldn't see who it was, only the curve of her back. The blood shone on the skin for a moment before being completely absorbed, and the silhouette erupted in a column of warm, white light.
Naruto's face went from pale red to beet red in an instant.
"NO WAY!!" he yelled, jumping back. "NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
He put his hands on his head, pulling at his blond hair. "I have to cut my thumb and then... and then draw on a girl's NAKED back?! Are you crazy?! They'll think I'm a total pervert! They're gonna beat me unconscious! Sakura would kill me! She'd launch me to the moon!"
He collapsed onto the ground, overwhelmed. It was all too much. The horrible visions of death and destruction. A talking system in his head that seemed like something out of a bad dream. And now, an embarrassing and seemingly useless power that would force him to make a fool of himself in the most humiliating way possible.
He wanted it all to be a nightmare. He wanted to wake up in his bed, ready to face a normal day of pranks and ramen, with graduation as his only happy memory.
But the images didn't feel like a dream. The memory of Sakura's scream as Sasuke walked away... the empty look in his rival's eyes... the village in ruins... they felt too real. Too painful. They burned in his memory as if he had actually lived them.
He sat there on the darkening street, his head in his hands. His graduation joy had evaporated, replaced by a cold, heavy fear that settled in his stomach. What could a fool like him do with that information? Go tell the old man Hokage?
He imagined the scene. "Third! I had a vision! Some guy with piercings is going to destroy the village!"
They'd lock him in an asylum before he could finish the sentence.
Tell Iruka-sensei? His teacher would look at him with that worried expression he always wore, think it was a bad joke, or that the stress had finally broken him.
No one would believe him. He was alone.
Like always.
The weight of that word crushed him. He had always been alone, but he had never felt so... isolated. Before, his loneliness was a challenge, something to fight against with jokes and shouts. Now, it was a cage.
But... if that power, that "Falna," was real... if he could really make someone stronger...
It wasn't for him. It was for someone else. So that person could help. So that those visions wouldn't come true. It was a tiny idea, a small spark in the overwhelming darkness of his panic.
He needed someone. Someone who trusted him. Or at least, someone who would listen. Someone who maybe, just maybe, would be desperate enough to accept such a strange offer.
His mind ran through the faces of his female classmates.
Sakura Haruno. The first one he thought of. He imagined approaching her. "Hey, Sakura, can I draw something on your back with my blood to give you an incredible power?" The image of her fist connecting with his face was instantaneous and vivid. Rejected.
Ino Yamanaka. She would laugh at him. She would laugh so hard she'd run out of breath, and then she'd tell everyone. The next day, he'd be known as "Naruto, the bloody-back pervert." Rejected.
His mind went blank. There was no one. The idea was stupid. The power was useless.
And then, a different face appeared in his mind. One he had seen in that flood of future visions. A pale face, framed by dark blue hair, with kind, strange eyes.
Hinata Hyuga.
The weird girl who always sat in the back, the one who would blush and fiddle with her fingers if he looked at her. The one who, he vaguely recalled, sometimes offered to help him with homework at the Academy, though he almost always ignored her, too busy with his own problems. He remembered one time, last year, when he had tripped and scattered all his practice shuriken. While everyone else laughed, she had quietly come over and helped him pick them up, her face completely red. He hadn't even thanked her.
And in the visions... he had seen her. He had seen her standing, wounded, but firm. He had seen her trying to protect him. He didn't understand from what, or why, but the image was clear. There was no fear in her eyes, only determination.
Naruto stood up slowly. The sun had set completely, and the lights of Konoha were beginning to flicker on, oblivious to the storm that had just broken out in one boy's heart. His new ninja headband felt heavy. It had stopped being a symbol of achievement and had become the weight of a terrible future that only he knew.
He had a strange power. A terrifying knowledge. And a single chance, a single person who might not run away screaming.
"Hinata..." he whispered into the night air. The name felt strange on his lips.
And for the first time in his new and complicated life, Naruto Uzumaki had a plan. A terrible, embarrassing, and probably doomed plan. But it was a plan. And it was all he had.
