I really hope that you eventually release these member only videos to the public. I think this video is particularly thought provoking for people that have trouble imagining how people could support the Nazis. Or how they would be the exception. But clearly there were many reasons why someone may be swept up in the collective enthusiasm on display here.

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown helped me realize what your video highlights. The author describes and recognizes how clueless those in the United States were about what was happening in Germany. The games were used to make Germany seem like a utopia. I highly recommend the book if you have not read it yet (book not movie.)

This reminds me of how Tucker Carlson propagandized (by accident or otherwise) about Russian food/groceries. The similarity isn't super strong, but I often talk to friends of mine on the right and it's odd to me how ready some of them are to engage in apologia for Russia and China.

To myself I thought some parallels could be found with Berlins Olympics and the Beijing Olympics in 2008, both were rising powers who used the opportunity given to them to showcase national prestige and power. Obviously they are not a 1-1 comparison.

I appreciated the video a lot. Being German myself but also of Jewish heritage I do find myself to have an apparently controversial view of this era. I also despise black and white thinking and while I am aware that the Nazis are responsible for some of the most cruel chapters in human history, I also think it's a mistake to demonise every approach they had to every topic. The more modern phenomenon of what I call "national self-hatret" you find in western civilisations is also not a solution in my opinion. I still believe that inspiring people to excel and to be proud of what they achieve as a group is good thing. I mean, that is what every parenting book teaches you to treat your children like. Inspire them, make them want to achieve things, make them believe in themselves. In my opinion it is a shame we through that onto the same pile with the war hunger, fascism and racism of the Nazis.

Hey, thanks for the comment. I've read Germany by Helmut Kohl, which tries to cover some of that in the last 1/5 of the book or so, but I think that hardly counts. I think the ongoing tensions between Eastern and Western Germans, and internationalist vs nationalist Germans that still go on are interesting. I'd love to use that as an angle to learn more about the time/place (and produce a piece on modern Germany) but currently do not see that happening soon.

I've always wondered why nazism and Hitler to this day have such a magnetic power people are still drawn to in some degree. I think you've captured the essence of it. Ryan, have you done any research into post-war Germany? The support for a new fuhrer, the fiasco(?) of denazification, the German population relation and knowledge about the Holocaust and Germany's miraculous economic growth? Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.
