The guy you were thinking of is John C Reilly. Dude is funny as hell and is a great actor. My movie suggestion is Boyz in the Hood (1991). It has an awesome cast. It stars Cuba Gooding, Lawrence Fishburne, Ice cube, Angela Bassett and Regina king.
