Why is the number of languages "increasing"?
🕑 Added 2024-05-07 12:06:59 +0000 UTCJust over a decade ago, the last native speaker of Yurok died. And the language – which had been spoken by indigenous people in California for more than 10,000 years – died with him. And Yurok isn’t alone; every year, an estimated nine languages go extinct. That’s why, if you look at an official count of the total number of living languages in the world over time, you can see that … wait, huh? How are we gaining languages?
You can watch our latest video here on Patreon, or on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3d5Ic1V270 (it will go live today at 1pm ET)
In other news, Sarah made a new beautiful wallpaper and made it available in 4K for desktop and mobile. You can find them attached to this post and you can download them (and all others) from https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/26o27x0jfjdw6hhb67h86/h?rlkey=ax5c0ccy95v1qiirih8cj1a9k&dl=0

Apologies for this Maarten. We're still figuring out what's the best option to share the videos with patrons. Currently Youtube doesn't allow a scheduled video to be unlisted (which is the only way the video is available for patrons to watch before it's public), so we're uploading the video to Patreon itself instead. However, that comes with the disadvantage of patrons not being able to watch and comment on Youtube before the video goes live, which I think isn't good either. So it seems that we should not schedule videos and just make them public manually (which is how we've traditionally done it). Thanks for your feedback and your support! -Ever

If patrons are supposed to be able to watch the YT version, then we can't, it's currently a members only video.
