Just a quick correction as Casen has incorrectly stated as fact the HAL and IBM connection, which has been denied by both Clarke and Kubrick and was always just a fan theory. Reading the 2010 novel, you find out HAL is named after Heuristic ALgorithmic Learning (or something close to this). Clarke even said he would have changed the name had he spotted the coincidence as they received some help from IBM.
