It may be wise to backup entire game(if you can afford disk space), or at least most crucial files so that you can restore them. You can run Steam in offline mode, and if online, best you can do is change download settings to have game update only during runtime. This gives you at least partial control.

Just copy update.rpf (openiv should notify and offer to do this automatically), and install the mod from the beginning.
