2021 in Review: Biggest Year Yet
🕑 Added 2022-01-01 03:32:16 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
I think it would be a mistake to say anyone *enjoyed* 2021, it's actually been the best year the channel has ever had. And that's both audience growth and output! I've put together some basic numbers for how the channel has been performing by runtime and games covered, which I don't think I had done before.
Here's what I discovered:
-- In 2015, I made 12.25 hours of content about 49 games.
-- In 2016, I performed a little worse: 10.35 hours about 46 games.
-- In 2017, about the same. 10.3 hours about 30 games, but with 4.2 hours travel content.
--In 2018, a small uptick. 14 hours about 36 games.
--In 2019, a good year: 12.4 hours about 22 games, plus 3.3 hours travel content.
--In 2020, the worst year. 12.4 hours of content about only 18 total games.
--In 2021, however, an all time high: 19.5 hours about 52 games.
It's been frustrating that the Gears of War project took as long as it did, it barely counts as this year, but I'm claiming it anyway since I did all the work this year and that's the thing this Patreon is for.
Also this year I hired an editor, Nate Greene, who's helped enormously with the audio. I feel like the channel is well set up going into the coming year to continue improving the quality of the videos and get them to a point where they reflect people's investment in the channel.
I felt, and I know a lot of other people felt, that this year was actually one of the worst I've had in terms of output. There have been multi-month gaps between releases *twice* this year. By the numbers, though, I've almost doubled the amount of work I produced in 2016 and 2017. Although the release schedule has been spare, and there's plenty to be irritated with about that, I actually managed to outperform myself by a significant margin just in terms of volume of writing.
I'm not sure how 2022 will go, exactly, but I'm almost ready for the travelogue videos and will start to work on those in the late spring/early summer. I've also got some more remastered videos on the way and some game videos I'm not sure if people will expect. So hopefully this coming year will be one where I'm able to continue to improve and surprise.
I want to thank everyone for their contributions and generosity-- it's been the channel's biggest year for that as well and I hope I continue to live up to your expectations.
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Noah, thanks for the great videos, and maybe buy Dr. Devon Price's book "Laziness Does Not Exist" for the road trips :-)

Happy new year! Thanks for taking good care of yourself, it's a reminder to us to do the same. Wishing all of us a creative and productive 2022 :)

"I hope I continue to live up to your expectations." We don't have expectations mate, just belief. You have a happy new year and we'll be here when the next one lands. You killed it in the Gears vid lad! Cheers.

Don't work yourself too hard!!! You're absolutely killing it. So glad you're getting some help with editing so you can focus on writing, research, etc. I've got a great feedback loop with your videos now- you put out a video that talks about a game I played a long time ago and I watch it, I go back and revisit the game, and then watch the relevant part of the video again. It's been a blast for resident evil.

Noah, I can't really convey how much I enjoy your work. I've rewritten this comment several times, with varying amount of fanboy-ism. I just want you to know how joyous it's been to watch you grow, from the tough days making pizza up through now.

Nate's cleanup skills are amazing and the jump up in quality is almost jarring. Definitely looking forward to your next road trip series.

Happy New Year, Noah! We're all looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2022!

Thank you for continuing to put out amazing content, and I look forward to more great deep dives in 2022!

While I discovered the channel because of the game reviews and enjoy them immensely - I'm still impressed you made an 8-hour video about the Resident Evil franchise! - I also enjoyed the traveloges as well! Your work inspired me to get out on the road more often and to just go where my nose would take me. Looking forward to your Route 66 and East Coast videos!

For whatever my small comment means to you Noah, your content this year was thoughtful, insightful, and worth plenty of revisiting in times between new releases. Your 2021 output, for my part, is what moved me to begin patronizing your content. Do what interests you and makes you happy, and I know it will do the same for me.

I'd given up hope that this Gears video was ever happening, what a splendid and unexpected little gift to end 2021 on. Appreciate all you do Noah, never change.

I've been watching your videos for years and honestly, they're such a treat to watch. I'm really looking forward to more of your travel videos and I hope you have a great New Year!

Excellent work and year! The numbers don't lie and you had a fantastic year. Always loving the content! I have no issue with multi month gaps, especially with communication. The point of patreon is to support people who's projects dont fit YouTube's monetary requirements

Happy New Year Noah! And congrats on a year of great content. I don’t think you need to apologise for long gaps when you’re producing 7.5 hour long videos! (Also congrats on demonstrating for once and for all that the stuff about videos only being successful on YouTube if 20 minutes or less is trash!) Here’s to a great 2022!

Happy New Yeah Noah, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Happy New Year, Noah! I do have to say though, that I'm always a little bewildered on your focus on quantity of output to measure the performance of the channel, when the incredible quality of your work makes that question if not irrelevant at the very least a misguided indicator. Keep on doing what you do at the pace that is comfortable and healthy for you and don't pressure or measure yourself with quantity!

Happy new year Noah! Thanks for the new year content!

You did fine, Noah. When you pushed something out, it was a lovely surprise of several hours of what felt like a friend talking about something he liked; I get we aren't "friends" more than para-socially but I still feel like you'd be good company. Keep on keeping on, it's probably going to be pretty hard to fuck up getting money from me.

Sneaking the GoW video in just under the wire I see :P It's an absolute pleasure to see a new video from you in my feed, and I'm looking forward to new travelogues in the coming year (COVID and your life circumstances permitting, of course). Happy New Year, and I wish you and yours all the best!

Been enjoying all of your videos this year, the Resident Evil one was a real epic in the classical sense. Happy New Year, Noah!

Oh man! And a video before new years!? Thanks Noah!

As long as your writing stays as eloquent as always, I'll be along for the ride. Happy New Year my dude!

This year has been a blast for what you've put out, but even in the past couple that you might not have had released the same quantity, I have never found your analysis to lack in quality. I have watched and rewatched many of your videos, and I have only been increasingly impressed by what you manage to put together. I can't wait to see what future years bring! Happy New Year!
Eddie George
You're great, Noah. Any progress is a pleasure. Happy new year.

You've had a fantastic year, Noah, and quite frankly you've been one of the bright spots of 2021 for me. I'm so glad to see you doing well and always pleased to see whatever you've got coming next. Happy new year, man!
Cal
You kicked ass this year, amazing work especially that monster of a Resident Evil retrospective!!
Liam Harrison
I love you, Noah, and having just finished my second watch of your Resident Evil video, never feel ashamed of taking the time you need to create your content. Every time I see a new NCG video on my dashboard, I break out in the biggest smile, and your videos have made this year far more bearable than it would otherwise have been. Best of luck for 2022, brother ❤️

Happy new year Noah and all! Thanks for all the great work and looking forward to future fun. :)

Happy New Year to you too, Noah. I'm looking forward to anything and everything you have to offer; I always do. And thank you, as always, for another wonderful year of content. You helped keep my 2021 sane.
