Oh man, this arc is hurtin' my heart. Steven's trying to figure out where the line between 'standing up for yourself' and 'being a bully' is, and as someone who's also been through abuse that is HARD when you're not taught at a young age. It really can be just as easy to be knife-tongued as it is to be a doormat. I can't blame Steven for being afraid of his own capacity for harm, even if he's being too harsh on himself right now.

Yo, Steven is kinda savage this season! I kind of love it! I mean, he has had to put up with people treating him terribly his whole life. Seeing him confident enough to fight back, including verbally, is really nice. Like I think in the comic where he poofs Rose he’s thinking about how he’s always wanted to fight back and has never been able to. It’s satisfying as a reader to see him at a point where he can do that. I love that growth. He’s still struggling obviously, but I really like this change in him!

Kid's really beating himself up over something as little a clapback against a jerk. It's interesting how that's such a normal teenage thing to do, but in Steven's eyes it's a big deal cause he's already got a messed up view of himself (or correct view of his "past self"?) and putting himself to way too high a standard.

Stevieboy said the fuck-word. I really love how compelling and unique you make White! Steven. He is his own character with his own conflict and motivations, and you tie his own version of the Steven identity crisis to White Diamond's nature perfectly. "I'm supposed to BE better!"

I really feel for Steven. He’s surrounded by plenty of people who, frankly, often act pretty shitty! But when he lashes out at them— in a frankly measured and reasonable way— he has to judge his actions so much more harshly than anything they did, just because he was once White Diamond.

Really enjoying the use of the crow as his confidante, too, contrasted with the touches of playfulness and empathy in its behavior - very thematically interesting!
