Yes RM's first mixtape was essentially that ..A MIXTAPE in the truest form. He rapped over free samples from artists that he loved and dropped it on soundcloud just as a "show my skill" exercise. Nothing else to gain from it - some free samples, some his own and then gave it to the world. Other rappers then started mixtapes after etc. and as they grew they created their own beats for the mixtapes and took it more serious. When RM dropped this on soundcloud it got noticed and he was ranked top 50 rapper by Billboard and this was just 2015 I believe when they were still largely unknown.

The original track is: Hypest Hype by Chain & Status I think it may have been an interview where RM said that he essentially did like an old school mixtape. He rapped over beats of artists that he has great respect for.
