Funny you write this I pretty much sent this exact idea to Luke today. Loser of the match picks next obstacle. Was trying to decide if it should be 2 or 3 skaters. I think it would be cool if offense always rotates regardless of trick landed to try and nullify the advantage of one skater selecting an obstacle. Also maybe 2 tries on defense.

There’s an Australian surfing comp format called boardriders that blends PVP/PVE/teams all into one. Wouldn’t work in skating because the randomness of waves coming brings the clock into play, but it’s a good example of a format that turns a PVE event to a team game

Mark is one of the most influential skaters of all time, he is considered the godfather of modern street skating. Has had a long career with tons & tons of footage through pretty much every single era, still uploading skating clips to his youtube almost daily. He's also clearly a very creative individual and has not only done painting and writing, but multiple performance art pieces and directed and starred in music videos. There's just no comparing the two. That's a pretty high standard set, and if we ignore all the merits we will just end up with bs fake icons who never had any real cultural significance, which then waters down the scene.

Remembering shows like "Abandoned with Rick McCrank" "Epically Laterd" and the "King of The Road Show". Along with all the little shows they did around skating. Seeing that is why I think so many older pros or retired dudes are trying to jump into media.

When I was getting into skateboarding a decade ago I for some reason was under the assumption that once you turn pro, that’s when you would start dropping a prolific amount of your best footage but that couldn’t be farther from the truth; 9 out of 10 times I feel like we’ve seen people go pro only for them to slowly start fading away until they retire and start some shitty podcast. It reminds me of what happens with indie bands once they sign to a label after having released their best album, you think they’re going to start turning things up but they just start making more watered down music. As far as podcasting goes, I don't think there's anything wrong with going into it. Just because your professional career is over doesn't mean you can't do something else. On one hand I can understand the hate for podcasting and the people in it. On the other hand, nobody wants to work a if there's an opportunity to make a living that doesn't trade your morals, and doesn't make you hate yourself and the world around you. Why not take it.

The PVP vs PVE explanation is the crux. No one will ever successfully create an interesting contest format that doesn’t replicate street skating. Street league is almost interesting because there are choices as to what obstacles you hit and in what order. Mike Mo thought an hour of dudes hucking down the same set would somehow improve upon that? Makes sense actually, since his short lived career was based on finding shin level ledges and 10 stairs in a variety of locations. Same environment, different trick doesn’t cut it buddy. Side note: Mike Mo did a fuel TV segment way back in the day. Part of the segment was they’d ask the skater what kind of music they’re into. Mike Mo, I shit you not, said he wasn’t into music.
