"Stendhal" was the pen name of Realist French writer Marie-Henri Beyle. He was best known for his psychological novel "The Red and the Black" (1830). In the novel set post-Napoleon restoration, a romantic, idealistic, and clever young man (Julien) from humble background deals with the realities of rising in his corrupt society while also seducing rich women. One theme is hypocrisy and materialist corruption (a sociological satire of France at the time). As I understand it, the Red symbolizes the uniforms of the French army (where Julien can't stand out), and the Black the uniforms of the Catholic clergy (where he can rise with his talents and deception). Julien finds that society's approval requires playing a role. Stain dresses in Red and Black to symbolize Life (Blood) and Death. He renounces fake heroes because they play their role for materialist gain, hence the name Stendhal.
