I ran across a Lucas Cranach the Younger painting of Herodias at the Louisville Speed Museum and the inscription indicated that the original painting had the decapitated head of John the Baptist until someone "thought it was too lurid" and "modified accordingly." This must have been a common practice - I had to doublecheck that this wasn't the same painting because the details are so similar.
